2046 Atlantic City Gamblers - Pitching Standouts

Right-handed relief pitcher Pat 'Muscles' Waites

Waites, 23, delivered consistent, solid performance out of the Gamblers' bullpen in his rookie BBA season. The 2nd round (95th overall) pick of the Gamblers in the 2041 BBA Amateur Draft finished the 2046 season 5-4 with 7 saves in 8 opportunities (.875 success rate), a 2.83 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, a 2.68 FIP, a .260 opponents' average, a .667 opponents' OPS, 51 strikeouts, and a 1.4 WAR in 54 innings pitched (62 appearances). The success of Waites may impact the team's decision on the $5 million team option on closer Augate Balun, who led the Johnson League in saves with 36 while converting saves at a 81.8% success rate (36 saves in 44 opportunities. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Gamblers could turn to Waites as a cheaper option in the closer role.

Right-handed starting pitcher Thiongo Amir

After early success in the Gamblers' rotation upon arrival in Atlantic City, 23-year old Thiongo Amir suffered a disappointing 20 loss campaign during the 2044 season, finishing the season with a 5.91 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 5.35 FIP. The disappointment of the 2044 season left some serious doubts as to whether or not Amir could remain as a fixture in the rotation, and even resulted in bullpen work in 2045 and 2046. After starting the season in the Gamblers' bullpen, Amir earned a promotion back into the Gamblers' rotation, and finished the season 10-8 with a 3.83 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, a 3.89 FIP, a .297 opponents' average, a .795 opponents' OPS, 109 strikeouts, and a 2.8 WAR in 164 1/3 innings pitched (36 appearances / 24 starts). Amir actually struggled out of the bullpen (0-1, 11.12 ERA, 2.29 WHIP, 8.93 FIP in 11 1/3 IP), but flourished out of the rotation (10-7, 3.29 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 3.51 FIP in 153 IP). The 2047 season will be Amir's final year of arbitration, so a decision on Amir's long-term future with the organization is imminent.

Right-handed relief pitcher Elijah "Half Pack" Campos

Campos, 28, delivered a solid 2046 season after years of inconsistent performance. The 2nd round (53rd overall) pick of the Gamblers in the 2036 BBA Amateur Draft finished the 2046 season 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a 3.99 FIP, a .234 opponents' average, a .680 opponents' OPS, 33 strikeouts, and a 0.3 WAR in 44 1/3 innings pitched (33 appearances). His 2046 is his second-best season as a member of the Gamblers' bullpen, with the best being his 2044 season, where he finished 6-2 with 1 save, a 2.88 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, a 3.49 FIP, a .203 opponents' average, a .615 opponents' OPS, 59 strikeouts, and a 0.8 WAR in 65 2/3 innings pitched (35 appearances). In stark contract, Campos has finished five of his seven BBA seasons with an ERA of 5.94 or worse -- 8.84 in 2040, 6.31 in 2041, 5.94 in 2042, 6.75 in 2043, and 6.13 in 2045. The 2047 season is the final season of arbitration for Campos -- unless Campos can string together a good season over two consecutive seasons for the first time in his career, it seems unlikely that Campos would be given a long-term extension.

Left-handed starting pitcher Carlos Flores

Flores, 25, saw his ERA jump a bit during the 2046 season, but he still put together a solid season as the ace of the Gamblers' rotation. The supplemental 2nd round (76th overall) pick by the Gamblers in the 2039 BBA Amateur Draft finished the 2046 season 14-10 with a 4.18 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, a 3.33 FIP, a .236 opponents' average, a .721 opponents' OPS, 238 strikeouts, and a 4.8 WAR in 189 2/3 innings pitched (33 starts). Flores led the BBA with an outstanding 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings, though it is a decline from the 13.0 strikeouts per nine innings he recorded last season. He also saw a slight jump in walks per nine innings compared to last season -- 2.4 in 2045 to 2.8 in 2046. Flores has two remaining arbitration-eligible seasons for the Gamblers in 2047 and 2048 before he is scheduled to hit free agency.
