Boardwalk Empire - 2045.7 - Rivera, Gamblers Agree to Extension

Juan Rivera Agrees to Six-Year, $162 million extension

The Atlantic City Gamblers have formally announced that the organization and left fielder Juan Rivera have agreed to a six-year, $162 million contract. The contract runs through the 2051 season, the final season of which is a player option, and pays $30 million for the 2046 and 2047 seasons; $26 million for the 2048 and 2049 seasons; and $25 million for the 2050 and 2051 seasons.

Big contracts are far from a rarity with this Gamblers front office, the most recent of which was the regrettable six-year, $109 million contract with first baseman Adrián Salazar, who is entering the final season of his contract. And while there may be question marks awarding any player a long-term, big money contract, inking Rivera certainly is far more defensible than the Salazar signing. While Salazar always struggled defensively while posting some great offensive seasons, Rivera has been extremely productive offensively and has played Diamond Glove caliber defense in left field following a shift from center field in 2044.

"I don't think it was any secret that getting something done with Juan was top priority this offseason. He is the face of the franchise and we are thrilled that he will be in a Gamblers' uniform for many, many years," said general manager Joshua Biddle, "he is a consummate professional and his dependability on the field and in the clubhouse is highly valued by this franchise."

Drafted with the 11th pick in the 1st round of the 2038 BBA Amateur Draft, Rivera signed with the Gamblers for a $7.5 million signing bonus. Rivera sprung through the Gamblers' minor league system with rapid velocity, spending the 2038 season with Class Short Season A-Bogota, and parts of the 2039 season with Class-A Long Island, Class-AA Trenton, and Class-AAA Brooklyn. Rivera made the Gamblers out of spring training in 2040, won the BBA JL Rookie of the Month Award for August, and finished 2nd place in the voting for the BBA JL 2040 Joe Gilstrom Newcomer of the Year Award. Overall, he is a four-time All-Star; a three-time BBA JL Charles Puckett Golden Bat Award winner (2-time CF, 1-time RF); a two-time BBA JL Sawyer Silk Silver Slugger Trophy winner; and a one-time BBA JL Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award winner (LF).
