Four Players Opt in to 2045 Season with Gamblers

Four players have officially notified the Atlantic City Gamblers front office that they will be back in Atlantic City for 2045 by exercising their options to remain with the team. The four players are starting right-handed pitcher Scotty Pendleton, first baseman Adrián Salazar, right-handed relief pitcher Jesús Arce, and right-handed relief pitcher Adam Barnard.

"Doorbell" Pendleton, 34, joined the Gamblers in December 2043 via a four-year, $40.74 million contract that will pay him $10 million for the 2045 season. The Gamblers have the ability to opt out of the remaining two year, $20.24 million commitment, which would pay $10.12 million for both the 2046 and 2047 seasons. Pendleton finished the 2044 season with the Gamblers 9-15 with a 4.94 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, a 5.03 FIP, a .264 opponents' average, a .810 opponents' OPS, 140 strikeouts, and a 0.7 WAR in 175 innings pitched (30 starts). The organization hopes that he's able to improve upon his disappointing first season in what will be his age 35 season, which may be a tough ask. Pendleton performed comparable to the player he replaced -- Kevin Morales -- who agreed to a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Portland Lumberjacks. Morales finished the 2044 season 12-15 with a 4.95 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 4.69 FIP, a .262 opponents' average, a .779 opponents' OPS, 116 strikeouts, and a 1.6 WAR in 181 2/3 innings pitched.

Salazar, 30, opted into the final year of the six-year, $109 million extension signed with the Gamblers in January 2039, a contract that will pay him $17 million for the 2045 season. Salazar saw his production drastically decrease after signing the contract extension, ultimately resulting in declining playing time in 2041 and each subsequent season. Salazar finished the 2044 season hitting .275/.292/.431 with 15 runs scored, 4 doubles, 4 home runs, 12 RBIs, and a -0.1 WAR in 107 plate appearances. Production that pales in comparison to his career year immediately before the extension, his 2038 season, where he finished the season hitting .320/.386/.628 with 99 runs scored, 39 doubles, 50 home runs, 142 RBIs, 12 stolen bases in 16 attempts (.750 success rate), and a 5.6 WAR in 691 plate appearances.

Arce, 37, joined the Gamblers on a two-year, $8.6 million signed in December 2043. Arce finished the 2044 season 1-2 with 2 saves in 3 opportunities (.667 save percentage), a 3.97 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, a 4.39 FIP, a .235 opponents' average, a .695 opponents' OPS, 40 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 59 innings pitched (29 appearances). Arce's 2045 salary decreases to $4.2 million after the $4.4 million paid in 2044. Arce is a positive clubhouse presence, and should claim a prominent role in the Gamblers' 2045 bullpen.

Barnard, 32, joined the Gamblers in December 2043 on a three-year, $10 million contract. He was a former first round pick of the Gamblers in 2029, a former top 100 BBA prospect (topping out at #23), and spent part of the 2032 season with the team prior to a trade for third baseman Bucky Dornster. In his Gamblers return, Barnard finished the 2044 season 1-3 with 3 saves in 4 opportunities (.750 save percentage), a 4.43 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, a 4.40 FIP, a .264 opponents' average, a .774 OPS, 75 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 87 1/3 innings pitched (41 appearances). Barnard is due $3.3 million for the 2045 season with a team option of $3.2 million for the 2046 season. Barnard, like Arce, should figure prominently into the Gamblers 2045 bullpen plans.
