Boardwalk Empire - 2044.7 - Changes Coming in Atlantic City?

Personnel Changes Coming in Atlantic City?

After a 69-93 campaign that resulted in a last place finish in the Johnson League Atlantic Division, the question is whether there will be significant change in the Gamblers' dugout going into the 2045 season.

Manager Bruce Frank, 64, is signed through the 2047 season after a contract extension was signed following the 2043 season. Frank just completed his third season at the helm as the Gamblers' skipper, recording a 242-244 (.498) record in that span, which included one playoff appearance in 2043. The recent contract extension would seem to point to Frank being safe at this point in time, as it's also been reported that he hasn't lost the locker room. That said, there have been some concerning declines in several key offensive players' performance, to the point where it appears to be more than coincidence and it's not outside of the realm of possibility that a full cleanout of the current staff could result in an attempt to reverse that trend.

Bench coach Mark Kidd, 62, just completed his fifth season as bench coach. There have been some reported clashes between the temperamental Kidd and laid back Bruce Frank behind the scenes, but they have generally appeared to have a good working relationship in the dugout. Some do wonder if there are mixed messages and "too many cooks in the kitchen" in delivering messages to the team -- Kidd has always been known to have a contrasting style, but his success within the Gamblers' organization gave him enough clout to support his differing point of view.

Pitching coach Lorenzo Sanchez, 56, just completed his fourth season as Gamblers' pitching coach, helping the team achieve a playoff berth in 2043. Sanchez helped the Gamblers post one of the best seasons in recent Gamblers' history in terms of pitching, which helped the team win a playoff series; however, that success surely failed to carry over to 2044 and imploded in spectacular fashion. Nothing has been reportedly decided as Sanchez is signed through 2046, but there seems to be some momentum towards the organization moving on from Sanchez.

Hitting coach Bartolo Esquivel, whose contract expires in the coming days, is an interesting case. The team can just allow his contract to expire after four seasons with the team, or bring him back and hope he's able to recapture some of the early magic where he helped the team become one of the better offenses in the BBA. Unfortunately, this season, the team took a massive step backwards, and the timing probably couldn't be worse for Esquivel, who remains highly regarded around the league. Some concerning two to three year declines of several players may warrant a change.

So who are some internal possibilities if personnel changes are made? Former Gamblers star António Sánchez seems like a manager-in-waiting and has managed for nine seasons within the Gamblers' minor league system. Rafael Bido and Mingo Boone have been working as hitting coach and pitching coach, respectively, and remain names with momentum internally. Ernesto Zamora, who has managed Class-A Long Island to three playoff appearances in five seasons also has become a dark horse candidate if a move is made. Of course, if any personnel changes occur, they could always dip into a fluid free agent market to fill a position. Time will tell.
