Boardwalk Empire - 2044.3 - Rough Season in Atlantic City

Post by Joshua Biddle » Tue Nov 10, 2020 12:23 am

Gamblers Struggle to Disappointing 69-93 Record

The Atlantic City Gamblers, coming off of a 87-75 (.537) campaign in 2043 that earned their first playoff berth since 2036, fell from 4th place to 8th place in the Johnson League Atlantic Division with a thoroughly disappointing 69-93 (.426) record in 2044.

Offensively, out of sixteen Johnson League teams, the Gamblers finished the season with a .249 batting average (13th), a .309 on-base percentage (11th), a .440 slugging percentage (8th), a .749 OPS (8th), 709 runs scored (9th), 1,366 hits (12th), 559 extra-base hits (6th), 226 home runs (6th), and 398 walks (3rd). Left fielder Juan Rivera continued to post stellar numbers (.290/.368/.608, 43 HR, 107 RBI), but missed a few weeks in mid-June with a bout of forearm tendonitis. Center fielder Edward Lake (.297/.360/.553, 27 HR, 82 RBI) and rookie right fielder José Romero (.275/.347/.533, 40 HR, 106 RBI) also produced, highlighting a strong outfield for Atlantic City. Outfielder / designated Stewart Illingworth, a key cog in the success of the 2043 Gamblers, saw a stark contrast from his past production, finishing the season slashing .228/.291/.388 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs versus his 2043 slash line of .285/.347/.561 with 41 home runs and 108 RBIs.

Out of the sixteen Johnson League teams, the Gamblers finished the season with a 4.69 ERA (14th), a 5.06 starters' ERA (14th), a 3.99 bullpen ERA (13th), 796 runs allowed (13th), 1,448 hits allowed (11th), a .262 opponents' batting average (11th), 250 home runs surrendered (15th), 377 walks (tied-9th), and 1,015 strikeouts (13th). Closer Carlos Flores (6-6, 32 saves, 1.94 ERA) was the brightest star and may get an opportunity to audition for the Gamblers' rotation in 2045. Starting pitcher Torazo Tanaka (6-9, 4.60 ERA) had a mediocre-at-best campaign, though he did finish strong in his final eight starts (5-0, 1.84 ERA). After early promise, 24-year old starting pitcher Thiongo Amir (7-20, 5.91 ERA) has declined significantly, tying Brett Cochran for the modern franchise record for most losses in a single season.

With continued pitching struggles and a sudden offensive dry spell among several key contributors, there are several questions lingering as the offseason starts. The Gamblers have a busy offseason in store if they are to improve and contend for the 2045 season.

Free Flores!! Get that man 180 innings, starter or reliever...

The JLA is tough, man. I don't know if there's an easy division in the BBA right now, but the Atlantic is a tough one.

Agreed.

Flores needs way more innings. Of course I'm also a guy running my staff in the traditional sense. I'm trying to figure out how to get certain guys more usage.

I think it's perfectly possible to get bullpen guys a lot of innings even with a more traditional staff... Just gotta allow the game to do it.

I'd like to see Flores in the rotation myself...I'd think he'd do well
