Gamblers Designate Five for Assignment

The Atlantic City Gamblers designated five players for assignment, likely ending their tenure with the organization as the offseason begins. Designated for assignment were second baseman Enrique Sagastizabal, first baseman / left fielder Ian Warren, first baseman Takanibu Arihyoshi, right-handed starting pitcher Juan Ramos, and right-handed starting pitcher / relief pitcher Charles Fry.

Sagastizabal, 27, was acquired by Atlantic City with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2039 BBA Rule 5 Draft from the Mexico City Aztecs organization. Sagastizabal struggled across two seasons at the BBA level (2040, 2043), hitting a measly .190/.260/.348 with 19 runs scored, 7 doubles, 6 home runs, 20 RBIs, and a -0.9 WAR in 174 plate appearances. Though he disappointed at the BBA level, he provided steady power and a WAR of 1.7 or better in three seasons with Class-AAA Brooklyn, most recently slashing .239/.312/.521 with 37 runs scored, 6 doubles, 20 home runs, 36 RBIs, and a 1.8 WAR in 261 plate appearances.

Warren, 23, was a former second round pick of the Gamblers (61st overall) in the 2037 BBA Amateur Draft. Warren's 2040 season with Class-A Long Island put him on the map as a prospect within the Gamblers system - a season where he finished the season hitting .319/.350/.655 with 98 runs scored, 39 doubles, 2 triples, 46 home runs, 105 RBIs, and a 6.3 WAR in 569 plate appearances. The performance earned Warren the CPL (A) BL 2040 Platinum Stick Award at First Base, the CPL (A) BL 2040 Outfield Rail Series MVP Award, and a second place finish in voting for the CPL (A) BL Sixto Mazzola Batter Award. Although Warren recorded a 2.7 WAR season with Class-AA Trenton in 2041 (.310/.353/.609, 22 HR, 72 RBI, 2.7 WAR), his prospects began to fade after two consecutive subpar seasons with Class-AAA Brooklyn in 2042 (.239/.294/.414, 16 HR, 71 RBI, -0.8 WAR) and 2043 (.213/.261/.338, 8 HR, 39 RBI, -1.3 WAR).

Arihyoshi, 24, was a former fourth round pick of the Gamblers (136th overall) in the 2037 BBA Amateur Draft. Arihyoshi, similar to Warren, became a focal point of the organization's attention after successful seasons in 2039 with Class-A Long Island and 2040 with Class-AA Trenton. Arihyoshi finished the 2039 season with Class-A Long Island hitting .280/.335/.574 with 79 runs scored, 34 doubles, 37 home runs, 96 RBIs, and a 4.0 WAR in 540 plate appearances, earning the CPL (A) BL 2039 Platinum Stick Award at First Base. Arihyoshi finished the 2040 season with Class-AA Trenton hitting .349/.425/.631 with 101 runs scored, 34 doubles, 3 triples, 37 home runs, 113 RBIs, and a 6.4 WAR in 612 plate appearances, earning the WCL (AA) DNL 2040 Platinum Stick Award at First Base and WCL (AA) DNL 2040 Jorge Olivas Batter Award. After a 1.0 WAR season for Class-AAA Brooklyn in 2041 (.277/.351/.468, 11 HR, 45 RBI) and a 0.8 WAR season for Class-AAA Brooklyn in 2042 (.265/.345/.501, 28 HR, 103 RBI), Arihyoshi rebounded to finish his 2043 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn hitting .310/.365/.540 with 40 runs scored, 16 doubles, 1 triple, 16 home runs, 39 RBIs, and a 2.0 WAR in 312 plate appearances. Despite the improvement in WAR, the decision was made that Arihyoshi likely would not factor in the organization's future plans and the decision was made to free the 40-man roster spot.

Ramos, 24, was a former fourth round pick of the Gamblers (133rd overall) in the 2036 BBA Amateur Draft. Ramos struggled at the BBA level in the lone season in which he appeared - the 2041 season - finishing the campaign 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 7.52 FIP, and a -0.1 WAR in 11 2/3 innings pitched (2 starts). Ramos was a CPL (A) BL All-Star selection during the 2039 season and finished the season 12-8 with a 3.23 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 2.89 FIP, and 4.5 WAR in 167 innings pitched (26 starts). Ramos also had solid seasons during the 2038 season with Class-A Long Island (10-6, 3.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 3.4 WAR) and 2043 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn (9-8, 3.40 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 3.90 FIP). Due to his past struggles at the BBA level, the decision was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Fry, 28, was a former third round pick of the Gamblers (94th overall) in the 2035 BBA Amateur Draft. Fry pitched for the Gamblers in the BBA across parts of five seasons, never establishing himself as a solid contributor in the rotation or bullpen, finishing his BBA career in Atlantic City 9-16 with a 6.46 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 6.24 FIP, 217 strikeouts, and a -1.1 WAR in 234 innings pitched (61 appearances, 40 starts). Fry was able to positively contribute as part of the in rotation for Class-AAA Brooklyn, including solid seasons in both 2042 (9-9, 3.43 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 4.21 FIP) and 2043 (5-8, 3.92 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 4.80 FIP). The decision to designate Fry for assignment given his resume' was expected.
