Randy Bader, Sven Burel Win Diamond Glove Awards

The Johnson League Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award winners have been officially announced, and on that list were two Atlantic City Gamblers - catcher Randy Bader and shortstop Sven Burel.

Bader, 22, had a solid season in his first full season as the Atlantic City Gamblers' catcher. Acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Hustlers alongside right-handed pitcher Jaime Sánchez for infielder Reece Wareham, Bader delivered the power at the plate that the team hoped for with 23 home runs. More surprisingly, he was able to deliver defensive metrics that impressed as well, despite scouts' questions about his long-term viability as a starting catcher due to an arm deemed inadequate. Bader finished ranked 1st in the Johnson League in fielding percentage (.999), 1st in zone rating (+3.5), 2nd in defensive efficiency (1.087), and 6th in runners thrown out percentage (30.1%) in 1,097 2/3 innings behind the plate. He only allowed 4 passes balls, recorded 1 error, and saw his runner's thrown out percentage increase to 30.1% from 20.5% in 472 1/3 innings behind the plate in 56 games for Atlantic City in 2041.

Burel, the 24-year old who also won the 2040 Diamond Glove Award, has continued to struggle at the plate while also continuing to deliver world-class defense at shortstop. Burel finished 1st in the Johnson League in zone rating (+12.1; +2.8 to 2nd place) and 1st in defensive efficiency (1.081; +0.029 to 2nd). Burel recorded 7 errors and converted 23.7% of defensive plays deemed "remote". Burel's play during the 2042 season yielded a 0.5 WAR despite poor production at the plate (.228/.283/.348, 7 HR, 38 RBI), thanks to his excellent defensive production. His poor offensive performance could result in competition at the position for the upcoming 2043 season; however, defensive production like Burel is difficult to replace, so he's assured a roster spot and likely significant time at the position over the course of a season.
