2041 Atlantic City Gamblers

The 2041 Atlantic City Gamblers had some early-season flashes of brilliance and late-season strings of disappointment, but overall, provided some reason for optimism for the Gamblers' faithful who have endured three sub-70 win seasons over the past four years. The Gamblers finished the season 78-84 (.481), finishing in 5th place of 8 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic, 21 games back of the division winner; although this certainly qualifies as yet another losing season, the team showed their first signs of tangible improvement that they have in quite some time.

Offensively, the 2041 Gamblers showed surprising strength. In the sixteen-team Johnson League, the Gamblers ranked 2nd in slugging percentage (.501); 3rd in OPS (.850); 4th in runs scored (922); 6th in hits (1,599); 1st in extra-base hits (656); and 3rd in home runs (262). The Gamblers were led by second-year right fielder Juan Rivera, who posted a Sawyer Silk caliber season with an incredible .362/.446/.733 slash line with a league-leading (tied) 58 home runs and 151 RBIs. Rookie left fielder Stewart Illingworth emerged from obscurity to post an unexpectedly proficient rookie season with a .352/.425/.610 slash with 33 home runs and 130 RBIs; and fellow rookie designated hitter Antonio Martinez also impressed with a .353/.413/.647 slash with 45 home runs and 122 RBIs. The young core of offensive talent made it exciting to come to the ballpark, helping to balance out the overall frustrations that fans have towards Gamblers' ownership at this time. The team hopes this core, with some offseason additions, can help lead them back into playoff contention sooner rather than later.

In sharp contrast to their offensive output, the pitching has continued to be the talk of the town, and not in a good way. In the sixteen-team Johnson League, the Gamblers ranked 11th in ERA (5.45); 9th in starter's ERA (5.64); 14th in bullpen ERA (5.18); 11th in opponent's average (.285); 13th in home runs allowed (236); and 15th in walks (653). Offseason free agent signing RHP Chet Parrish (6-9, 6.30 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 4.97 FIP) struggled immensely in his first season in Atlantic City; LHP Jorge Alvarado (10-11, 4.94 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 5.49 FIP) seemingly regressed after a sub-4.00 ERA in a full season of work this past year; and other hopefuls haven't panned out. A late season surge from 21-year old Thiongo Amir provides hope that the rotation has at least one mainstay, with fellow 21-year old Augusto Moran earning three late starts after spending the season with Class-AAA Brooklyn.

The Gamblers reported a slight decline in attendance compared to last season, which likely coincides with their late season falloff and an overall increase in ticket prices. The Gamblers' budget should remain close to this season's, though there is some expectation it could be lowered. Regardless of the final budget, the Gamblers possess payroll flexibility with only $65.5 million in salary commitments on the books for the 2042 season.

Any team with Juan Rivera healthy is going to be a dangerous team. It should be an interesting off-season for Atlantic City.
