Boardwalk Empire - 2040.8 - Transactions

Gamblers Return Rule 5 Draftee, Claim One off Waivers, Designate One for Assignment

The Atlantic City Gamblers conducted three transactions over the past week-and-a-half, returning Rule 5 Draftee Domingo Valdés to the Vancouver Mounties organization, designating first baseman Gustavo Aguilera for assignment, and claiming third baseman Ernesto Garza off of waivers from the Des Moines Kernels.

Valdés, 19, struggled offensively in limited action for the Gamblers, though he looked every part the talented defensive third baseman that the team believed he could be when they drafted him with the fifth pick in the third round (69th overall) in the Rule 5 Draft. In five games (two starts), Valdés hit .111/.273/.111 with 1 run scored and a -0.0 WAR in 11 plate appearances. With his relative youth compared to their other Rule 5 draftees and other options available in the free agent and waiver market, the front office opted to use the roster spot for a more major league ready option following the injury to incumbent third baseman Bucky Dornster. Dornster suffered a fractured finger which is expected to sideline him for a minimum of five weeks.

Ultimately replacing Valdés is Ernesto Garza, a waiver claim from the Des Moines Kernels organization. Garza, 25, was drafted by the Yellow Springs Nine organization with the 22nd pick of the 7th round (207th overall) in the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft. Garza made his BBA debut during the 2035 season in Des Moines, spending parts of six seasons with the Kernels, finishing his career with the team hitting .259/.310/.436 with 154 runs scored, 67 doubles, 11 triples, 45 home runs, 196 RBIs, 8 stolen bases in 13 attempts (.615 success rate), and a 2.3 WAR in 1,390 plate appearances (359 games). He hit .255/.311/.510 with 14 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 21 RBIs, and a 0.6 WAR in 2039, also sporting a 105 OPS+, before declining this season in a small sample size (160/.222/.440, 5 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, -0.1 WAR in 27 plate appearances). Garza provides the same versatility to a lineup as Dornster did as a switch hitter, though Garza is an average at-best third baseman and is most certainly a step down defensively from Dornster, even factoring in Dornster being a step slower than years past.

In a move that’s equal part surprising and necessary, the Gamblers’ officially pulled the plug on first baseman / designated hitter Gustavo Aguilera. Aguilera, 25, struggled to live up to the offensive potential scouts believed he possessed when the Gamblers made him the first BBA Amateur Draft selection of the BBBS Enterprises era (23rd pick in the 1st round of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft). Aguilera improved at every level in the minor leagues, including two excellent seasons with Class-AAA Brooklyn in 2035 (.326/.396/.653, 19 HR, 56 RBI, 170 OPS+ in 268 PA) and 2036 (.339/.376/.788, 23 HR, 52 RBI, 203 OPS+ in 202 PA), which heightened expectations for success with Atlantic City. Aguilera’s peak with the Gamblers was a strong playoff run during the 2036 season (.364/.386/.745, 9 R, 3 2B, 6 HR, 8 RBI, 184 OPS+, 0.8 WAR in 59 PA), culminating in 2036 BBA JL Geoghegan Round MVP Award honors; followed by a very good 2037 campaign, where he finished the season hitting .275/.333/.507 with 90 runs scored, 41 doubles, 2 triples, 35 home runs, 96 RBIs, a 114 OPS, and a 1.8 WAR in 711 plate appearances (162 games). Aguilera’s 2037 season would be his lone season in Atlantic City with a positive WAR. The team reportedly hoped for him to clear waivers to have him return to Class-AAA Brooklyn, but expected that possibility to be minimal.
