Gamblers Add Three in Rule 5 Draft

The Atlantic City Gamblers have rarely been significant players in the Rule 5 Draft, but coming off a poor season and ready for a rebuild with plenty of financial flexibility, the team opted to draft four lottery ticket prospects. With the fifth pick of the first round (fifth overall), the Atlantic City Gamblers selected second baseman Enrique Sagastizabal from the Mexico City Aztecs; with the fifth pick of the second round (37th overall), Atlantic City selected utility infielder Fernando Rodríguez from the Charlotte Cougars; with the fifth pick of the third round (69th overall), Atlantic City selected third baseman Domingo Valdés from the Vancouver Mounties; and with the fifth pick of the fourth round (101st overall), Atlantic City selected third baseman Adrián Ramos from the San Antonio Outlaws.

Sagastizabal, 23, spent the 2039 season between Aztecs’ affiliates Class-AA Parker Pilots and Class-AAA Los Cabos Corsairs. For Class-AA Parker, Sagastizabal finished the season hitting .233/.330/.558 with 48 runs scored, 9 doubles, 24 home runs, 56 RBIs, and a 2.0 WAR in 285 plate appearances (65 games); and finished the season for Class-AAA Los Cabos hitting .230/.324/.459 with 11 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 home runs, 11 RBIs, and a -0.0 WAR in 72 plate appearances (22 games) for Los Cabos’ championship campaign. Sagastizabal has an average at-best glove that likely can only play at second base or first base, but has enough range and arm to play some corner outfield. Sagastizabal’s power caught the eye of Atlantic City scouts – Sagastizabal finished the 2038 season at the Class-A level hitting 42 home runs (.815 OPS).

Rodríguez, 22, spent the 2039 season between the Charm City Jimmies’ affiliates Class-A Cumberland Miners and Class-AA Frederick Travelers. For Class-A Cumberland, Rodríguez finished the season hitting .333/.382/.507 with 7 runs scored, 1 double, 9 RBIs, 2 stolen bases in 3 attempts (.667 success rate), and a 1.1 WAR in 76 plate appearances (19 games); for Class-AA Frederick, Rodríguez finished the season hitting .253/.314/.353 with 45 runs scored, 27 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 34 RBIs, 14 stolen bases in 21 attempts (.667 success rate), and a 1.3 WAR in 407 plate appearances (89 games). Rodríguez played a good shortstop for Class-AA Frederick and has the range and versatility to play above average at all infield and corner outfield positions, likely also being able to play a passable center field.

Valdés, 19, spent the 2039 playing for Vancouver’s Rookie Class affiliate the Laramie Wranglers, where he finished the season hitting .264/.328/.559 with 34 runs scored, 24 doubles, 1 triple, 13 home runs, 31 RBIs, and a 2.6 WAR in 247 plate appearances (63 games). Valdés took home the 2039 SNL (R) HL Platinum Stick Award at Third Base, bringing some attention to the youngster. Valdés has good range and can likely grow into an above average third baseman. Scouts also believe he could excel defensively at first base, and could potentially play left or right field.

Ramos, 23, spent the 2039 season split between San Antonio Outlaws’ affiliates Class-AA Beaumont Drillers and Class-AAA Austin Rattlers. For Class-AA Beaumont, Ramos finished the season hitting .234/.305/.554 with 38 runs scored, 17 doubles, 18 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a 1.5 WAR in 249 plate appearances (61 games); for Class-AAA Austin, Ramos finished the season hitting .263/.314/.519 with 40 runs scored, 28 doubles, 13 home runs, 38 RBIs, and a 1.9 WAR in 283 plate appearances (73 games). Ramos flashed good defensive metrics at third base at both levels. Although he’s likely best suited for the hot corner, Ramos could also probably slide over to second base, and like the others, looks to have the ability to man a corner outfield position in a pinch.
