Atlantic City Gamblers Lose Three in Expansion Draft

The Atlantic City Gamblers lost three players in the expansion draft, but have shed a total of $73 million in total obligations and $22 million in obligations for the 2040 season. Right-handed starting pitcher André Georges, 32, was selected with the first pick in the fourth round (seventh overall) by the Portland Lumberjacks and is due $9 million guaranteed over the next two years ($5m/$4m); left-handed starting pitcher Júlio Alicea, 29, was selected with the first pick in the 31st round (61st overall) by the Portland Lumberjacks and is due $40 million guaranteed over five years ($9m/$9m/$8m/$8m/$8m) unless he opts out of his contract following the 2041 season or opts not to exercise any of the player options for the final two years of his contract; and right-handed starting pitcher Celio Marin, 31, was selected with the second pick in the 32nd round (64th overall) by the Portland Lumberjacks and is due $24 million over the next three years ($8m/$8m/$8m).

Georges finished the 2039 season for Atlantic City 11-10 with a 4.72 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 5.27 FIP, .531 quality start percentage, 114 strikeouts, and a 1.3 WAR in 192 2/3 innings pitched (30 starts). Georges was aided by a fortunate .255 BABIP and finished with a 99 ERA+. Over his two seasons with Atlantic City, he finished 23-23 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 5.01 FIP, .484 quality start percentage, 269 strikeouts, and a 3.6 WAR in 392 2/3 innings pitched (62 starts).

Alicea finished the 2039 season for Atlantic City 7-12 with a 4.41 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 4.49 FIP, .533 quality start percentage, 130 strikeouts, and a 2.7 WAR in 175 2/3 innings pitched (30 starts), also recording a .287 BABIP and 106 ERA+. The team reportedly was relatively satisfied with Alicea’s first year of production, but relished an opportunity to shed the financial obligation after the team vastly underachieved during the 2039 season.

Marin finished the 2039 season for Atlantic City 4-12 with a 6.16 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 5.86 FIP, .429 quality start percentage, 107 strikeouts, and a -0.2 WAR in 114 innings pitched (33 appearances, 18 starts). Marin disappointed immensely in his first season in Atlantic City and was removed from the rotation due to his lackluster performance.

Though the Gamblers have substantial room under the salary cap with the money saved, it’s unlikely the Gamblers will be significant players in the free agent market, a stark contrast to past seasons. The team will likely focus more on upside plays and/or shorter-term investments with an eye towards value.

“It definitely changes our focus a bit. Last year was a year with high expectations and very few of our moves went as planned. The expansion draft gives us a chance to undo some of that and gives us an opportunity to put our focus in our young players as we work to see who can become part of the core of this franchise moving forward,” said GM Joshua Biddle.
