2039 Atlantic City Gamblers Recap
The Atlantic City Gamblers finished the 2039 season with a 65-97 record, finishing in 4th place of 5 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic Division in the final season of the current five team division alignment. After being denoted as the “winners of free agency” by some pundits, that “victory” turned out to be hollow and the end result was the worst season for the Gamblers in the BBBS Enterprises’ era (2031-2039), the worst season posted by the team since the 2017 season, and a tie for the sixth worst record posted by the organization since 1995 (45 seasons). To make matters worse regarding on field performance, the team reportedly took a massive financial hit, and questions have started to float around Atlantic City about long-term viability of the franchise. Concerns have also been raised by fans and even local media regarding the competence of BBBS Enterprises, Keith Bleeker, and general manager Joshua Biddle; the team has provided little information to the public and opted not to speak to the press following the season despite having done so regularly following past seasons.
As for the on field product itself, it was a rough season at the plate as well as on the mound. Though the latter was unsurprising and a regular occurrence in Atlantic City, the poor performance at the plate defied expectations. The team witnessed severe declines in performance from 1B Adrian Salazar, fresh off of his six-year, $109 million extension; and 3B Bucky Dornster. SS Reece Wareham was the biggest bust of free agency. SS Lloyd Braun certainly failed to live up to expectations, yet wasn’t completely awful. RF Stanley R. Perimutter cemented what will likely be his last season in Atlantic City with another disappointing campaign. And the list goes on.
There were few bright spots in the starting rotation – veterans Júlio Alicea and André Georges were far from great, but were at least mediocre, which is rare enough in Atlantic City. Yu Vgotmael flashed some potential. And there were some positive strides from the young players in the bullpen. Celio Marin was another expensive, free agent bust both in the rotation and out of the bullpen upon demotion.
The season as a whole got off to a rough start and had a lingering damper when Troy Coffman was dismissed, and interim manager Edgar Ferreira did little to turn around the sinking ship. If anything, organizational insiders suggest his leadership was “like trying to use scotch tape as duct tape”, despite some success in the minor leagues. A decision has yet to come down on Ferreira’s future, which should be forthcoming shortly upon the conclusion of the season, though either way it’s tough to pin all the blame on a manager that inherited a tough situation.
