2038 Tallahassee Gamblers – Hitters / The Good

The 2038 Tallahassee Gamblers finished the season 19-9 with the following hitters impressing:

Image

3B Jesús Díaz

.500/.650/1.643, 7 R, 1 2B, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 0.8 WAR in 14 AB

Díaz, 22, dazzled for the Gamblers in his limited plate appearances. The 2035 19th round selection by the Long Beach Surfers was signed by the Gamblers as a minor league free agent in February 2037, spending the 2037 season with Class-Short Season A Bogota and the 2038 season with Class-A Long Island. He finished the 2037 season with a .275/.382/.614 slash with 19 doubles, 17 home runs, and 48 RBIs in 147 plate appearances, and followed it up with a solid 2038 campaign in Long Island with a .276/.358/.455 slash with 10 doubles, 6 home runs, and 26 RBIs in 179 plate appearances. Díaz is an average defensive third baseman. It’s expected he will remain at Class-A Long Island for the 2039 season as he works to improve his strikeout percentage (2037: 17%, 2038: 19%).

SS Sven Burel

.384/.471/.465, 17 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBI, 1.4 WAR

Burel, 20, posted a very good offensive season for the Gamblers, while simultaneously looking great at shortstop (2 errors, .980 fielding percentage, +2.0 zone rating, 1.124 defensive efficiency). The international free agent signee discovered by the Gamblers’ organization in May 2035 spent the 2037 season with Class-A Long Island after playing the previous three seasons with Rookie Class Albany. He finished the 2038 season for Long Island hitting .277/.345/.398 with 43 runs scored, 15 doubles, a triple, 6 home runs, 21 RBIs, a stolen base, and a 2.5 WAR in 321 plate appearances, also posting a good defensive season at shortstop (5 errors, .986 fielding percentage, +7.6 zone rating, 1.076 defensive efficiency). Burel may receive a spring training invite, and it’s hard to determine exactly what he’ll be up to in 2039.

C José Barajas

.377/.463/.681, 10 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 1.3 WAR in 69 AB

Barajas, 21, was discovered by Gamblers’ scouts and signed to a minor league contract out of Cuba in June 2034, spending the 2036 season with Rookie Class Albany; the 2037 season with Rookie Class Albany and Class-Short Season A Bogota, and Class-A Long Island; and the 2038 season with Class-A Long Island. Barajas finished the 2038 season with Class-A Long Island hitting .259/.300/.488 with 53 runs scored, 31 doubles, 21 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a 2.8 WAR in 436 plate appearances, also recording 3 errors (.996 fielding percentage), a -0.0 zone rating, a .877 defensive efficiency, a .348 caught stealing percentage, and a 3.15 catcher’s ERA. It’s expected Barajas will either remain with Class-A Long Island or be promoted to Class-AA Trenton in 2039, with the team emphasizing defensive work, though his results at Class-A Long Island were encouraging given concerns from scouts over his arm behind the plate. He finished the Winter League season with a .250 caught stealing percentage and 4.23 catcher’s ERA.

OF Jonathon Edmonds

.364/.426/.664, 28 R, 3 2B, 10 HR, 30 RBI, 5 SB in 6 ATT, 1.5 WAR in 110 AB

Edmonds, 23, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 15th pick in the 9th round (254th overall) of the 2034 BBA Amateur Draft, spending the 2034 and 2035 seasons with Class-A Long Island, and the 2036, 2037, and 2038 seasons with Class-AA Trenton. Edmonds finished the 2038 season hitting .298/.371/.591 with 87 runs scored, 24 doubles, 5 triples, 37 home runs, 101 RBIs, 9 stolen bases in 16 attempts (.563 success rate), and a 5.1 WAR in 561 plate appearances. Edmonds, a natural right fielder, played primarily in center field for Class-AA Trenton in 2038, recording less than stellar results (-8.3 zone rating, .972 defensive efficiency). Edmonds may play another season with Class-AA Trenton or may be promoted to Class-AAA Brooklyn for the 2039 season.

OF John Noble

.324/.397/.600, 20 R, 11 2B, 6 HR, 28 RBI, 1.0 WAR in 105 AB

Noble, 21, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 11th pick in the 3rd round of the 2036 BBA Amateur Draft, spending the 2036 season with Rookie Class Albany and Class-Short Season A Bogota; the 2037 season with Class-A Long Island and Class-AA Trenton; and the 2038 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn. Noble finished the 2038 season for Class-AAA Brooklyn hitting .250/.323/.467 with 78 runs scored, 37 doubles, 2 triples, 23 home runs, 60 RBIs, and a 1.9 WAR in 571 plate appearances. Defensively, in right field, Noble was adequate, recording 3 errors (.988 fielding percentage), a -2.3 zone rating, and a .977 defensive efficiency. Though Noble disappointed at the plate for Class-AAA Brooklyn after a .300/.376/.577 slash line with 15 home runs for Class-AA Trenton in 2037, there is traction around the idea of Noble being promoted to the majors to start in right field for Atlantic City in 2039. The disappointing seasons of incumbents Stanley R. Perimutter (.230/.302/.412, 25 HR, 59 RBI) and Victor Guerra (.202/.287/.355, 8 HR, 25 RBI) make it a very real possibility.

1B Enrique Benítez

.298/.408/.587, 20 R, 10 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 23 RBI, 1.1 WAR in 104 AB

Benítez, 24, the 23rd pick in the 6th round (180th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft, spent the 2031 and 2032 seasons with Rookie Class Albany; 2033, 2034, and 2035 seasons with Class-Short Season A Bogota; 2036 and 2037 seasons with Class-A Long Island; and the 2038 season with Class-AA Trenton. Benítez finished the 2038 season with Class-AA Trenton hitting .288/.374/.510 with 63 runs scored, 31 doubles, 18 home runs, 56 RBIs, and a 3.2 WAR in 439 plate appearances. Benítez flashed sporty defensive metrics at first base (1.000 fielding percentage, +4.9 zone rating, 1.087 defensive efficiency), which was supported with continued performance during the Winter League season (.995 fielding percentage, +0.6 zone rating, 1.052 defensive efficiency). Although it took awhile for Benítez to advance through the Gamblers’ system, he is finally starting to show proficiency, though there are concerns about how he will continue to adjust to stiffer competition on the mound. If he proves able, his glove at first is certainly an asset.

C Miguel Ledezma

Ledezma, 21, signed a minor league contract with the Gamblers in September 2037, spending both the 2037 and 2038 seasons with Class-AA Trenton. Jumping straight from college to the Class-AA level in 2037, Ledezma struggled (.236/.316/.387, 9 HR, 50 RBI), but recovered to post strong numbers in 2038 - .291/.392/.520 with 49 runs scored, 27 doubles, 1 triple, 17 home runs, 61 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), and a 4.5 WAR in 414 plate appearances. Ledezma impressed behind the dish as well in 2038, posting a .449 caught stealing percentage (up from .305 in 2037) and a 3.69 catcher’s ERA (down from 3.88 in 2037). It’s expected that Ledezma will be promoted to Class-AAA Brooklyn.

2B/SS Imazighen Kibasila

Kibasila, 18, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 17th pick in the 3rd round of the 2037 BBA Amateur Draft, spending both the 2037 and 2038 seasons with Rookie Class Albany. Kibasila finished the 2038 season with Rookie Class Albany hitting .268/.340/.524 with 36 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, 3 stolen bases in 3 attempts (1.000 success rate), and a 3.1 WAR in 256 plate appearances. Kibasila split the season between second base and shortstop, recording mediocre defensive metrics for both. Possessing the raw ability and range to play all infield and outfield positions adequately, it’s possible the Kibasila represents a utility man of the future for the Gamblers. It’s expected Kibasila will be promoted to Class-Short Season A Bogota for the 2039 season.

OF Miguel Gonzáles

Gonzáles, 23, went undrafted in the BBA Amateur Draft, signed with the Gamblers as a minor league free agent in June 2036, spending the 2036 season with Rookie Class Albany, 2037 with Class-A Long Island, and 2038 with Class-AA Trenton. Gonzáles finished the 2038 season hitting .274/.353/.603 with 84 runs scored, 11 doubles, 7 triples, 37 home runs, 79 RBIs, 5 stolen bases in 13 attempts (.385 success rate), and a 4.4 WAR in 465 plate appearances. Gonzáles played a very good right field as well, recording 2 errors (.989 fielding percentage), a +4.0 zone rating, and a 1.046 defensive efficiency. It’s expected that Gonzáles will be promoted to Class-AAA Brooklyn based on his continued performance thus far at each level following promotion.
