Boardwalk Empire - 2038.7 - Mark Kidd's Future in Atlantic City's Dugout?

Mark Kidd Wins Second Straight Sunshine League Skipper of the Year, Leads Team to Second Straight Championship. Kidd to Replace Coffman?

Mark Kidd took the helm of the Bogota Scholars – the Atlantic City Gamblers’ Short Season A affiliate – prior to the 2037 season, having only served as a manager for one season with San Luis of the FPL (11-13) during the 2031 season and one season with the Beaumont Drillers (Class-AA San Antonio – 48-22) in 2036. Without much fanfare around the move, it seemed at the time that Kidd was brought in to help stabilize Bogota while Gamblers’ legend António Sánchez got his feet wet managing Rookie Class Albany. The expectation that Kidd was around for a short-term fix without much hope for upward mobility has dwindled to the point of extinction over the past two years, as Kidd has led the once pathetic Scholars franchise – a team that had nine consecutive losing seasons entering the 2037 season, including a 0-40 finish in 2028 – to a 48-22 finish in 2037 and a 44-29 finish in 2038, winning the 2037 and 2038 Sunshine League Supremacy Series championship. Kidd was voted the Sunshine League Skipper of the Year both seasons.

With the personnel landscape around Atlantic City in an uncertain period with rumors persisting about the future of manager Troy Coffman, the question remains how fast can Kidd move through the ranks and does he have a future at the big league level? The Gamblers’ front office does not traditionally allow managers to reach the final year of their contract without an extension, and as such, there are no openings in higher levels of the Gamblers’ minor league system. Furthermore, the only minor league team in Atlantic City’s system that did not produce a winning record was Class-AAA Brooklyn, further clogging the personnel pipeline. Bruce Frank, who has managerial experience with BBA’s Seattle and Rockville franchises, was the manager of Class-AAA Brooklyn’s losing campaign, but he reportedly signed a larger-money deal for a minor league manager through 2040. It’s not clear at this point if he is at risk. If he was dismissed, it’s probable that Kidd and Class-AA Trenton manager Jack Parkinson – who led Class-AA Trenton to the 2037 Warren Cox League The Final Judgement championship – would be finalists for the position. Could he or Parkinson be in play for the Gamblers’ managerial gig? Time will tell.
