Boardwalk Empire - 2038.6 - Perimutter 0-21 to End Season... Noble Up Next?

Stanley Perimutter Closes Season on 0-21 Skid with John Noble Waiting in Wings

In what has been a miserable two seasons for Stanley R. Perimutter, it’s been hard for the Gamblers’ embattled right fielder to find any silver lining. This couldn’t have been more apparent than it was at the annual Atlantic City Gamblers’ end-of-year press event, with Perimutter addressing questions about his performance and future after ending the season on a 0-21 hitless skid -- a span that included two walks, a hit by pitch, and one RBI.

“Look, I’m working hard. I’m here working out every day with my teammates. I’m working on my game. Nobody wants to go for 0-21, nobody enjoys going 0-21, and I sure as hell don’t want to let my teammates or the fans down with that kind of performance,” said Perimutter, “I’m just not in the best place right now. Doing what I can to fix it.”

Perimutter’s final hits of the season were accumulated in the Gamblers’ 8-5 win against the Charm City Jimmies on September 21st, recording a single in the bottom of the sixth inning and a single in the bottom of the eight inning, finishing the game 2-4 with a run scored. After that game, Perimutter’s 0-21 streak included 9 groundouts (including grounding into one double play), 7 flyouts, 4 strikeouts, and an instance of reaching on error. Perimutter finished the 2038 season hitting .230/.302/.412 with 57 runs scored, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 25 home runs, 59 RBIs, and a 0.0 WAR in 500 at-bats; he also had a stint in Class-AAA early in the season before being recalled, hitting a disappointing .159/.229/.273 with 2 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBIs, and a -0.5 WAR in 44 at-bats. Despite his struggles, Perimutter recorded his fifth consecutive season with 25+ home runs, and improved his batting average by five points compared to last season. The allure of Perimutter’s .283/.352/.542, 44 HR, 118 RBI season in 2035 still resonates with fans, and he has remained popular among the Gamblers’ fan base due to his work in the community and spending a substantial amount of time signing autographs pre-game for children. His .238/.324/.464, 36 HR, 93 RBI campaign in 2036 still displayed his power prowess, but was the first sign that he may have overachieved in 2035.

Next season, Perimutter will be in the final year of the three-year, $13.65 million contract signed in November 2035 to buy out his arbitration years. Fans will likely want Perimutter to stick around after 2039, but it may simply come down to money and opportunity – the Gamblers have twenty-one year old outfielder John Noble primed and ready for his major league opportunity (he has reportedly been upset at not getting the opportunity this season). Noble finished the 2038 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn hitting .250/.323/.467 with 78 runs scored, 37 doubles, 2 triples, 23 home runs, 60 RBIs, and a 1.8 WAR in 508 at-bats. He is currently ranked as the Gamblers’ #9 overall prospect and #6 hitting prospect, and played a big role in Class-AA Trenton’s 2037 Warren Cox League The Final Judgment championship win, finishing that season hitting .300/.376/.577 with 54 runs scored, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 15 home runs, 48 RBIs, and a 3.0 WAR in 253 at-bats.

That's a tough two-season slide for a guy who looked pretty solid.

0-21 - that's a tough way to end the season! Hard to make a case for a contract beyond '39 with that.
