Gamblers Dismiss Pitching Coach John Adams After 2+ Seasons, Hire Nihat Ilahi in Interim Capacity
In the midst of a 58-72 season, the Atlantic City Gamblers officially shook up the staff with the firing of pitching coach John Adams.
Adams, 50, joined the Atlantic City organization in 2034 after two years with the Carolina Flight (AAA-Huntsville), amassing a record of 67-83 (4.63 ERA) and 64-86 (4.26 ERA) during the 2032 and 2033 seasons, respectively. Upon signing with the Atlantic City organization, Adams was assigned to Class-AA Trenton, where the team went 75-56 with a playoff berth and a 3.92 ERA in 2034, and 75-56 with a playoff berth and a 3.90 ERA in 2035. His early success with Class-AA Trenton propelled him to the job with the big league club during the team’s personnel overhaul, and team success at the big league level came early for Adams with the team achieving a 90-72 record and a playoff berth during the 2036 season despite a 4.73 team ERA.
The early success, however, was short lived, with the Gamblers stumbling to a 68-94 record with a 4.92 ERA in 2037, and a 58-72 mark with a 5.00 ERA to the point of his firing this season. The climbing team ERA seems to have been enough to oust Adams, though management has not released any statement on their thinking. Young pitching also haven’t lived up to expectations, with the team achieving similar results as a staff despite some turnover in the rotation and bullpen. Questions have been lingering in Atlantic City since May regarding the job security of the entire major league staff, given the organization has twice fired managers in season in the BBBS Enterprises ownership era – Iain Heijnen in 2031 and Daniel Berrocales in 2035. No word on the job security of the remaining staff, though the fact nobody else was dismissed with Adams suggests they will at least finish out the season.
With Adams dismissed, the team looked outside the organization to fill the interim role, adding Nihat Ilahi. Ilahi, 53, served as a pitching coach for only one season – during the 2025 season for the Helsinki Chill (A), with the team finishing 93-47, clinching a playoff berth, and recording a 2.96 ERA. Ilahi had reportedly been doing consulting work for the organization, opening a window for an opportunity in an interim capacity.

Someone's got to pay the price for losing, and it's not going to be the GM.
