Gamblers Offseason

The Atlantic City Gamblers entered the 2038 season with a significant shift in expectations following a disappointing 2037 campaign that saw the Gamblers come to the finish line with a 68-94 (.420) record, 4th place of 5 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic Division and 32 games behind division winner and eventual Landis Champion Rockville Pikeman.

The Gamblers front office opted to cut payroll this season after rumors circulated about poor financial performance last season. After a 2037 payroll of about $100 million, the team payroll is projected to be in the $90 million - $95 million range for the 2038 season. The Gamblers lost several players as free agents, most notably LF Alfredo Salazar, who opted out of the final year of the three-year, $54 million signed with the Gamblers in December 2035. Salazar, 36, was reportedly open to discussing an extension with Atlantic City, though talks never progressed and Atlantic City opted instead to move on from the decorated outfielder, who struggled this past season to a .232/.356/.458 slash line with 83 runs scored, 35 doubles, 5 triples, 25 home runs, 79 RBIs, 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts (.867 success rate), and a 2.0 WAR in 530 at-bats. Salazar signed a three-year, $38 million with Yellow Springs, awarding Atlantic City a supplemental draft pick in the second round of the 2038 BBA Amateur Draft. The Gamblers did not lose any other big ticket free agents, but chose not to offer arbitration to two Gamblers who had spent several years with the organization – shortstop José Vela and designated hitter / right fielder Glenn Gorman. Vela, 26, finished the 2037 season hitting .135/.176/.206 with 12 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run, 8 RBIs, 2 stolen bases in 2 attempts (1.000 success rate), and a -1.4 WAR in 141 at-bats for Atlantic City, not faring much better for Class-AAA Trenton once demoted. Gorman, 30, also declined significantly from his back-to-back 30 home run seasons in 2034 and 2035, finishing the season hitting .219/.327/.356 with 24 runs scored, 5 doubles, 5 home runs, 15 RBIs, and a -0.2 WAR in 146 at-bats. On the pitching side, the Gamblers declined the option on right-handed starting pitcher Rogerio Vázquez and opted not to make an arbitration offer to right-handed reliever Tomokazu Harada. Vázquez, 30, struggled during the 2037 season for Atlantic City, finishing 8-14 with a 6.19 ERA, a 1.64 WHIP, a 5.85 FIP, a .367 QS%, 93 strikeouts, and a -0.1 WAR in 171 2/3 innings pitched (30 starts). His 2037 season marked a sharp decline from his 2036 season, finishing 16-10 with a 3.84 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, a 4.37 FIP, a .419 QS%, 112 strikeouts, and a 2.7 WAR in 187 1/3 innings pitched (31 starts). Harada finished the 2038 season 1-2 with a 6.31 ERA, a 1.88 WHIP, a 4.38 FIP, 35 strikeouts, and a 0.3 WAR in 45 2/3 innings pitched (33 appearances).

In terms of additions, the Gamblers added right-handed starting pitcher André Georges, catcher Allan MacHugh, left-handed relief pitcher Luis “Flat Tire” Flores, and outfielder Víctor “Barbarian” Guerra. Georges, 29, signed a four-year, $26 million deal ($11m/$6m/$5m/$4m [PO]) after spending the 2037 season with the New Orleans Crawdads and Omaha Hawks post-trade, finishing the season 5-12 with a 5.12 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, 5.26 FIP, .273 opponent’s average, .429 quality start percentage, 84 strikeouts, and a 0.8 WAR in 142 1/3 innings pitched (21 starts). MacHugh, 33, agreed to a two-year, $7 million deal ($3m/$4m [PO]) after spending the 2037 season with the Long Beach Surfers prior to his release in July, when he signed with the Las Vegas Hustlers. MacHugh finished the 2037 season hitting .205/.288/.349 with 14 runs scored, 7 home runs, 17 RBIs, and a 0.1 WAR in 146 at-bats. MacHugh brings veteran presence and an excellent eye to the mix behind the plate and it’s likely he’ll see significant playing time. Flores, 32, agreed to a two-year, $7.2 million contract ($3.6m/$3.6m [PO]) after spending the 2037 season between Montreal and Wichita, finishing the season 4-0 with a 3.44 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 3.41 FIP, a .273 opponent’s average, 50 strikeouts, and a 1.1 WAR in 65 1/3 innings pitched (40 appearances). Guerra, 32, agreed to a three-year, $14.25 million deal ($5m [opt-out]/$4.7m/$4.55m [PO]) after spending the 2037 season with Des Moines where he finished the season hitting .246/.321/.451 with 49 runs scored, 18 doubles, 2 triples, 20 home runs, 56 RBIs, 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts (.833 success rate), and a 1.0 WAR in 399 at-bats.

With the season upon us, we’ll see how the 2038 version of the Atlantic City Gamblers perform.

That was quite a decline by Gorman - not surprised you didn’t bring him back. Things have got to be looking up this season: how can you go wrong with a guy named Flat Tire Flores?
