Rookie Class Albany Finishes 35-29, Misses Playoffs

The heralded move to bring back longtime Atlantic City Gamblers António Sánchez as manager, Rafael Bido as hitting coach, and Mingo Boone as pitching coach of Rookie Class Albany – their debut season as personnel – came and went with mixed results during the 2036 season. The Albany Atoms finished the 2036 season with a 35-29 record, 3rd place of 5 teams in the Frontier League (FL) Can-Am Division, -4 games of division winner Oshawa Dodgers.

The Atoms’ offensive output was poor, ranking 11th of 15 teams in the FL in batting average (.245), 10th in on-base percentage (.296), 11th in slugging percentage (.398), 11th in OPS (.694), 12th in runs scored (257), 9th in hits allowed (543), 10th in extra-base hits (214), 11th in home runs allowed (53), 12th in walks (122), 15th in strikeouts (438), and 2nd in stolen bases (46). Despite the poor output, there were some standouts, specifically 20-year old first baseman José Garza (.319/.398/.574, 16 2B, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 1.8 WAR in 141 AB), 21-year old right fielder Miguel Gonzáles (.268/.347/.523, 13 2B, 4 3B, 13 HR, 41 RBI, 2.6 WAR in 235 AB), and 20-year old outfielder Jerry Alirez (.295/.356/.404, 23 R, 12 2B, 2 3B, 9 RBI, 2 SB, 0.5 WAR in 146 AB). Garza, a 20th round pick, struggled with Class-S A Bogota, but raked in Rookie Ball to the tune of a .972 OPS, while projecting as a plus defensive first baseman. Gonzáles, a minor league free agent signing in June, projects to be a plus-defensive outfielder with pop. He has an above average ability to draw walks, but struggles to put the ball in play. Still, with his outfield range and power potential, he’ll likely get a chance to show what he can do with Bogota next season. Alirez looks to be a plus-defender at the corner outfield positions as well, lacks power, but is slightly above average in nearly every other category pertaining to hitting. Though they weren’t world-beaters, the organization seems to like what they saw from 18-year old shortstop Sven Burel (.269/.300/.384, 19 R, 20 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 28 RBI, 3 SB, 1.6 WAR in 242 AB) and 19-year old second baseman Lienhard Peissel (.315/.333/.438, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 SB, 0.6 WAR in 73 AB). Both were decent at the dish, and possess qualities that could make them elite fielders. 19-year old first baseman Júlio Juárez (.214/.244/.274, 2 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBI, -0.7 WAR in 84 AB) and 21-year old third baseman Jeff Robinson (.170/.220/.202, 5 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 SB, -0.7 WAR in 94 AB), and 17-year old center fielder Bradley Sheen (.172/.248/.256, 23 R, 5 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 16 SB, -1.0 WAR in 215 AB) all struggled at the plate for Albany. Perhaps, the most disappointing was Sheen, a 2036 6th round selection who has the potential to be an elite infielder or outfielder based on his impressive range. He’ll likely get a clean slate in 2037 with Albany.

The Atoms’ pitching was decent, but did not rank particularly strong. The Atoms finished 10th of 15 teams in the FL in ERA (3.66), 10th in starters’ ERA (3.40), 9th in bullpen ERA (4.35), 10th in runs allowed (253), 9th in hits allowed (515), 7th in opponents’ average (.234), 6th in BABIP (.257), 11th in home runs allowed (71), 12th in walks (153), 8th in strikeouts (411), and 4th in defensive efficiency (.735). The rotation was headlined by 19-year old left-hander Jorge 'Doctor' Alvarado, an international free agent signing in 2034 who signed for $6.5 million. Alvarado finished the 2036 season 5-3 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, a 2.71 FIP, a .182 OAVG, a .636 QS%, 66 strikeouts, and a 2.2 WAR in 73 1/3 IP (11 starts). 19-year old Félix Sánchez (6-2, 2.78 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 3.06 FIP, .191 OAVG, .909 QS%, 55 K, 1.9 WAR in 77 2/3 IP / 11 starts), an international free agent discovery, pitched very well and is starting to build momentum internally as one of the team’s top prospects. 18-year old rght-handed starter Juan López (2-5, 3.84 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 4.17 FIP, .241 OAVG, .545 QS%, 58 K, 0.7 WAR in 75 IP / 11 starts) and right-handed starter Bill Pérez, both 2036 draft picks (Pérez – 5th round; López – 10th round), flashed ability and could become factors with further development and tutelage from Mingo Boone. Out of the bullpen, 20-year old right-hander Naonobu Kato (1-0, 2.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 2.94 FIP, 11 K, 0.2 WAR in 14 2/3 IP / 6 appearances), 21-year old right-hander Raúl Rentería (1-0, 1 save, 3.07 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 3.32 FIP, 25 K, 0.3 WAR in 29 1/3 IP / 12 appearances), and 21-year old right-hander Manny Flores (1-1, 3.45 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 4.33 FIP, 11 K, -0.0 WAR in 13 IP / 11 appearances) all were solid performers.

On his first year as manager, Sánchez said “it was a fun season. Didn’t quite get to where we wanted to be, and myself, Raffy, and Mingo still have some work to do with these guys. Gotta like some of this talent though, can’t wait to see who we have to work with next year.”
