Class-A Long Island Finishes 67-64, Fails to Make Playoffs

The Long Island Legion finished the 2036 season with a 67-64, 3rd place of 5 in the Baxter League (BL) Northeast Division, 15 games back of division winner Cumberland Miners. The Legion failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive season and the 26th time in the past 27 seasons.

The Legion’s lack of success can be traced back to an ineffective offense, ranking poorly in most offensive metrics – 11th of 15 in the BL in batting average (.236), 11th in on-base percentage (.284), 12th in slugging percentage (.395), 12th in OPS (.679), 14th in runs scored (489), 10th in hits (1,068), 13th in extra-base hits (379), 8th in home runs (164), 4th in walks (271), 7th in strikeouts (842), and tied for 9th in stolen bases (33). 21-year old corner outfielder David Flores, a 2035 2nd round pick, was the Legion’s top bat, finishing the season hitting .301/.327/.501 with 64 runs scored, 24 doubles, 5 triples, 24 home runs, 77 RBIs, 4 stolen bases in 14 attempts (.286 success rate), and a 3.8 WAR in 531 at-bats. Flores also played plus defense at both corner outfield positions. The Gamblers reportedly view Flores favorably and consider him among the team’s top hitting prospects in a system that remains pitcher-heavy at this time. 21-year old first baseman Raúl López (.261/.327/.534, 26 HR, 59 RBI, 2.8 WAR in 341 AB), 21-year old outfielder Raúl Castrejón (.253/.301/.447, 20 HR, 59 RBI, 2.3 WAR in 486 AB), and 23-year old second baseman Pedro Mendoza (.203/.264/.418, 26 HR, 56 RBI, 2.2 WAR in 428 AB) all provided some power to Long Island’s lineup. López had a resurgence after two subpar campaigns with Long Island in 2034 and 2035, looking much more like the player who slashed .323/.375/.652 with 32 home runs and 101 RBIs for Rookie Class Albany in 2033. Castrejón is a natural corner outfielder, but played the majority of the season as the Legion’s starting center fielder, hoping he can improve his range and play a plus center field in the future. Mendoza is a great defender at second base (6 errors, .990 fielding %, +6.3 ZR, 1.043 EFF) with pop, but hits for a poor average and frequently strikes out. Utility infielder/outfielder Clément Besson (.266/.312/.423, 11 HR, 34 RBI, 2.4 WAR in 376 AB) struggled when promoted to Class-AA Trenton, but returned to Long Island to post a successful campaign. Though scouts have cooled on his future prospects, he will likely remain in the Gamblers’ minor league system for at least a few more years due to his work ethic and versatility. 21-year old designated hitter / outfielder Máximo Ramírez (.182/.254/.397, 7 HR, 15 RBI, -0.2 WAR in 121 AB), 21-year old shortstop António Orantes (.168/.201/.245, 3 HR, 17 RBI, -0.4 WAR in 208 AB), and 29-year old catcher Rich Stanley (.133/.161/.242, 3 HR, 8 RBI, -0.6 WAR in 120 AB) all disappointed at the plate for Long Island. Orantes was released in June due to his poor performance, and Ramírez is likely skating on thin ice after completing his second disappointing season in a row. Still, the team has to wonder if the 2033 20th rounder (pick 16, 573rd overall) still has the talent that helped him slash .311/.372/.693 with 26 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a 2.6 WAR in 244 at-bats with Rookie Class Albany in 2034.

Though Long Island disappointed offensively, the team’s pitching was strong, ranking 5th of 15 in the BL in ERA (3.29), 5th in starters’ ERA (3.27), 5th in bullpen ERA (3.33), tied for 4th in runs allowed (465), 2nd in hits allowed (1,021), 2nd in opponents’ average (.228), 5th in BABIP (.257), 10th in home runs allowed (162), 9th in walks (245), 2nd in strikeouts (1,000), and 4th in defensive efficiency (.729). The rotation was strong with 21-year old right-hander Torazo Tanaka (9-5, 2.66 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 3.36 FIP, 76 K, 2.5 WAR in 132 IP / 20 starts), 19-year old right-hander Miguel Peña (7-10, 3.00 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 3.54 FIP, 117 strikeouts, 2.4 WAR in 147 IP / 23 starts), 23-year old right-hander Gustavo Estrada (8-4, 3.21 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 3.30 FIP, 76 K, 2.0 WAR in 103 2/3 IP / 19 appearances / 17 starts), 21-year old right-hander Domingo Otero (10-7, 3.28 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 3.47 FIP, 107 K, 2.9 WAR in 170 1/3 IP / 24 starts), and 21-year old right-hander Charles Fry (6-7, 3.52 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 2.83 FIP, 159 K, 4.2 WAR in 158 2/3 IP / 25 starts) all displaying their talent, and each of them will likely continue to progress through the Gamblers’ minor league system. Out of the bullpen, 19-year old southpaw Vaclav Vroonland (4-10, 33 saves in 36 opportunities, 2.69 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 2.28 FIP, 64 K in 67 IP / 59 appearances) displayed his potential as a future closer, though the ten losses was a bit of a disappointment. Left-hander Daniel Rosario (0-0, 1.32 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 0.95 FIP, 42 K, 1.2 WAR in 27 1/3 IP / 18 appearances / 2 starts) was effective, especially out of the bullpen, though two pitches and minimal movement makes AAA his probable ceiling.
