Class-AA Trenton Finishes 83-48, Eliminated From Playoffs

The Trenton Generals finished the 2036 campaign 83-48, 1st place in the Donaldo League (DNL) Colonial Division, +16 games over the 2nd place Frederick Travelers. The strong season came to an end when the Generals were eliminated 2-0 in the Interior Series by the Newton Falls Flying Tigers.

The Generals’ offense graded well in virtually all major categories – 2nd of 15 in the DNL in batting average (.267), 3rd in on-base percentage (.339), 1st in slugging percentage (.464), 1st in OPS (.802), 2nd in runs scored (685), 1st in hits (1,218), 1st in extra-base hits (464), 1st in home runs (203), 6th in walks (482), 2nd in strikeouts (741), and 9th in stolen bases (41). 23-year old designated hitter Joseph Byrd headlined the Gamblers’ lineup, finishing the season hitting .328/.389/.612 with 102 runs scored, 44 doubles, 2 triples, 35 home runs, 94 RBIs, and a 5.7 WAR in 539 at-bats. Byrd didn’t play a single inning in the field for Trenton, though he has some experience at first base and is capable of playing the position, although a full season at the position would likely prove him to be below average. A left-handed bat, Byrd’s bat is viewed as potentially viable at the major league level, particularly against right-handed pitching (.341/.404/.662, 83 R, 34 2B, 2 3B, 29 HR, 71 RBI VS RHP), though finding a place will be difficult long-term with the Gamblers’ glut of first basemen. 25-year old first baseman Ashton Duncan (.287/.400/.587, 89 R, 29 2B, 37 HR, 94 RBI, 5.4 WAR in 467 AB), 21-year old catcher Gabriel Flores (.286/.348/.563, 53 R, 24 2B, 22 HR, 60 RBI, 1 SB in 1 attempt, 3.6 WAR in 325 AB), and outfielder Jonathan Edmonds (.271/.329/.579, 80 R, 14 2B, 10 3B, 33 HR, 84 RBI, 6 stolen bases in 11 attempts, 3.9 WAR in 432 AB) all had great seasons at the plate. Duncan is a plus defensive first baseman (4 errors, .997 fielding %, +4.2 ZR, 1.046 EFF) and Edmonds had a decent season defensively in center field (2 errors, .993 fielding %, -0.9 ZR, .970 EFF) despite being better suited for a corner outfield position. Flores hasn’t shown a strong proficiency behind the plate to date, though his arm and hitting ability makes him the de facto catcher of the future for Atlantic City. 25-year old outfielder Carlo Gargiulo (.307/.374/.547, 16 HR, 31 RBI in 254 AB) and 31-year old outfielder Mike Barnett (.296/.355/.485, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 1.2 WAR in 196 AB) also added productive 2036 campaigns to the Generals’ lineup. With top heavy production from several players, the Generals did have plenty of underachievers at the plate – 31-year old third baseman Todd Mitchell (.227/.260/.282, 2 HR, 9 RBI, -1.0 WAR in 163 AB), twenty-six year old shortstop Seong-chae Yi (.220/.296/.302, 5 HR, 45 RBI, -0.1 WAR in 404 AB), 28-year old third baseman David Muñíz (.218/.261/.371, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 0.2 WAR in 124 AB), and 26-year old second baseman Steve Sproston (.197/.235/.255, 12 R, 0 HR, 8 RBI, -0.5 WAR in 157 AB).

On the pitching side, the Generals also graded well – 5th of 15 in the DNL in ERA (3.71), 4th in starters’ ERA (3.77), 6th in bullpen ERA (3.61), 5th in runs allowed (543), 5th in hits allowed (1,061), 5th in opponents’ average (.238), 4th in BABIP (.265), 4th in home runs allowed (144), 7th in walks (458), 5th in strikeouts (894), and 7th in defensive efficiency (.719). The Generals’ rotation was led by 21-year old left-hander Yu Vgotmael, one of the players received in the Dan Cannon trade, who finished the season 9-3 with a 2.74 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, a 3.53 FIP, 112 strikeouts, and a 2.8 WAR in 131 1/3 innings pitched (23 starts). 26-year old right-hander Cipriano Aguirre (8-3, 2.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 3.87 FIP, 100 strikeouts, 2.0 WAR in 119 2/3 IP / 21 starts) and 22-year old right-hander José Contreras (11-3, 4.03 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 4.54 FIP, 76 strikeouts, 1.1 WAR in 129 2/3 IP / 21 starts) both also were solid contributors to the rotation. Aguirre continues to work on his arsenal and stuff, though he is home run prone, limiting the projection of him cracking the majors. Contreras has pitched effectively as a starter despite having only two effective pitches; long-term, Contreras probably will end up moving to the bullpen, though he’ll likely be given the opportunity to start until he is no longer productive. The Generals had great performances from several young relievers – 20-year old right-hander Clarence McCall (2-1, 5 saves in 6 attempts, 1.59 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 2.63 FIP, 16 strikeouts, 0.7 WAR in 22 2/3 IP / 24 appearances), right-hander Manuel “Dino” Rivera (3-1, 6 saves in 6 opportunities, 1.70 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 0.89 FIP, 44 strikeouts, 2.0 WAR in 37 IP / 27 appearances), 20-year old right-hander José Ordóñez (6-3, 13 saves in 15 opportunities, 2.52 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 3.11 FIP, 32 strikeouts, 1.1 WAR in 39 1/3 IP / 33 appearances), 21-year old right-hander Jorge Reyes (0-0, 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 3.85 FIP, 12 K, 0.1 WAR in 20 1/3 IP / 12 appearances), and 25-year old left-hander Roger Girard (6-0, 2.73 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, a 3.87 FIP, 56 K, 0.4 WAR in 52 2/3 IP / 27 appearances). McCall, Rivera, Ordóñez, and Reyes all are in the Gamblers’ long-term plans. Girard, the 15th pick in the 9th round (254th overall) of the 2032 BBA Amateur Draft, has a good fastball and a great slider but is prone to home runs and has poor control. Still, Girard has delivered his third consecutive solid season after a decent season with Class-S A Bogota in 2034 and Class-A Long Island in 2035. Girard is the type of pitcher that will likely be released if he struggles, but he has continued to deliver results so when will the magic run out?
