FPL Pitchers – The Positives

The Tallahassee Gamblers finished the 2035 FPL season 18-10, tied for first place in the Panhandle Division and earning a spot in the postseason. The following pitchers impressed for Tallahassee:

RHP Ignacio Martínez

Martínez, 22, finished the 2035 FPL season 2-0 with 6 saves in 6 opportunities (1.000 save percentage), a 0.00 ERA, a 0.44 WHIP, a 0.42 FIP, a .114 OAVG, a .238 BABIP, 23 strikeouts, and a 1.0 WAR in 13 2/3 IP (10 appearances). Martínez, the 20th pick in the 3rd round (94th overall) of the 2030 BBA Amateur Draft, started the 2035 season with Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season 4-7 with 26 saves in 31 attempts (.839 save percentage), a 3.66 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP, a 3.38 FIP, a .180 OAVG, a .209 BABIP, 64 strikeouts, and a 0.7 WAR in 51 2/3 IP (47 appearances). His performance with Class-A Long Island earned a promotion to Class-AA Trenton, where he finished the season 1-2 with 10 saves in 12 opportunities (.833 save percentage), a 6.75 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, a 4.72 FIP, a .234 OAVG, a .276 BABIP, 15 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 12 IP (14 appearances). Though Martínez had mixed results for Class-AA Trenton, it’s expected that he will be promoted to Class-AAA Brooklyn to start the 2036 season.

RHP Domingo Otero

Otero, 20, finished the 2035 FPL season 1-0 with a 0.55 ERA, a 0.80 WHIP, a 2.55 FIP, a .175 OAVG, a .217 BABIP, 11 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 16 1/3 IP (5 appearances). Otero, the 16th pick in the 10th round of the 2033 BBA Amateur Draft, spent the majority of the 2035 season with Class-Short Season A Bogotá, where he finished the season 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP, a 2.88 FIP, a .875 QS%, a .178 OAVG, a .204 BABIP, 36 strikeouts, and a 1.5 WAR in 54 IP (8 starts). Otero’s performance for Class-Short Season A Bogotá earned him a selection to the 2035 Sunshine League All-Star Game, and a promotion to Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, a 3.35 FIP, a .500 QS%, a .255 OAVG, a .275 BABIP, 6 strikeouts, and a 0.2 WAR in 12 IP (2 starts). Otero, the #13 prospect in the Gamblers’ system, is projected to remain with Class-A Long Island to start the 2036 season.

RHP José Contreras

Contreras, 21, finished the 2035 FPL season 1-0 with 2 saves in 2 opportunities (1.000 save percentage), a 2.37 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, a 2.76 FIP, a .250 OAVG, a .327 BABIP, 21 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 19 IP (10 appearances). Contreras, the 23rd pick in the 11th round of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft, spent the 2035 season with Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season 7-5 with a 4.02 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, a 3.53 FIP, a .529 QS%, a .248 OAVG, a .272 BABIP, 76 strikeouts, and a 1.9 WAR in 105 1/3 IP (17 starts). Contreras is expected to remain with Class-A Long Island to start the 2036 season after being added to the 40-man roster this offseason; after a solid season as a starter for Class-A Long Island, there has been talk within the organization regarding a full-time move to the bullpen for Contreras for the 2036 season given he has doesn't have an effective third pitch at this time.

RHP Clarence McCall

McCall, 19, finished the 2035 FPL season 0-0 with 1 save in 1 opportunity (1.000 save percentage), a 2.77 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP, a 3.27 FIP, a .186 OAVG, a .211 BABIP, 5 strikeouts, and a 0.2 WAR in 13 IP (5 appearances). McCall, the 15th pick in the 3rd round (82nd overall) of the 2034 BBA Amateur Draft, started the 2035 season with Class-Short Season A Bogotá, where he finished the season 0-1 with 7 saves in 9 opportunities (.778 save percentage), a 2.84 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, a 2.54 FIP, a .234 OAVG, a .313 BABIP, 14 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 12 2/3 IP (12 appearances). RHP Lúcio Gómez

Gómez, 21, finished the 2035 FPL season 0-1 with 1 save in 2 opportunities (.500 save percentage), a 3.27 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, a 4.25 FIP, a .298 OAVG, a .353 BABIP, 11 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 11 IP (8 appearances). Gómez, the 26th pick in the 5th round (155th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft by the Montreal Blazers, was acquired by the Gamblers via a trade with Montreal in December 2034. Gómez spent the 2035 season with Class-AA Trenton, finishing the season 8-3 with 27 saves in 30 opportunities (.900 save percentage), a 2.72 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, a 3.38 FIP, a .213 OAVG, a .248 BABIP, 46 strikeouts, and a 1.3 WAR in 53 IP (51 appearances). Gómez’s performance earned him a second place finish in 2035 WCL (AA) DNL Reliever of the Year Award voting. Gómez, the #22 prospect in the Gamblers’ organization, is expected to be promoted to Class-AAA Brooklyn for the 2036 season.

RHP Yoshitoshi Ota

Ota, 21, finished the 2035 FPL season 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, a 4.48 FIP, a .600 QS%, a .218 OAVG, a .256 BABIP, 25 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 30 IP (5 starts). Ota, an international amateur free agent signing out of Japan by the Carolina Kraken / Rocksville Pikeman organization, was acquired by the Gamblers on 06/02/2035 in a trade and spent the 2035 season playing for Class-Short Season A Bogotá and Class-A Long Island. Ota finished the 2035 season with Class-Short Season A Bogotá 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, a 2.68 FIP, a .750 QS%, a .165 OAVG, a .195 BABIP, 45 strikeouts, and a 1.6 WAR in 51 1/3 IP (8 starts), earning a promotion to Class-A Long Island. For Class-A Long Island, Ota finished the season 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, a 2.91 FIP, a .500 QS%, a .235 OAVG, a .275 BABIP, 10 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 14 IP (2 starts). Ota, the #87 prospect in the BBA and the Gamblers’ #4 prospect, is expected to start the 2036 season with Class-A Long Island, though there is a chance he earns a promotion to Class-AA Trenton.

RHP José Ordóñez

Ordóñez, 19, finished the 2035 FPL season 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, a 1.64 FIP, a .263 OAVG, a .385 BABIP, 13 strikeouts, and a 0.4 WAR in 10 IP (6 appearances). Ordóñez, the 15th pick in the 8th round (226th overall) of the 2034 BBA Amateur Draft, spent the 2035 season with Class-Short Season A Bogotá, where he finished the season 1-1 with 2 saves in 2 opportunities (1.000 save percentage), a 0.96 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, a 1.95 FIP, a .131 OAVG, a .163 BABIP, 13 strikeouts, and a 0.7 WAR in 18 2/3 IP (26 appearances).
