FPL Hitters – the Positives

The Tallahassee Gamblers finished the 2035 FPL season 18-10, tied for first place in the Panhandle Division and earning a spot in the postseason. The following players were impressive and had a positive impact on the Gamblers’ season:

Image

LF Máximo Ramírez

Ramírez, 20, had a spectacular 2035 FPL season, albeit in very limited action. Ramírez finished the 2035 FPL season hitting .625/.769/1.375 with 6 runs scored, 2 home runs, 3 RBIs, and a 0.5 WAR in 8 at-bats. Drafted with the 16th pick in the 20th round (573rd overall) of the 2033 BBA Amateur Draft, Ramírez spent the 2035 season with Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season hitting .179/.258/.214 with 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 RBI, 0 stolen bases in 1 attempt (.000 success rate), and a -0.3 WAR in 28 at-bats. Ramírez made the jump to Class-A after spending a terrific season at Rookie Class Albany, where he finished the season hitting .311/.372/.693 with 50 runs scored, 13 doubles, 1 triple, 26 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a 2.6 WAR in 244 at-bats; however, he was unable to secure consistent playing time with Class-A Long Island due to the depth in the outfield. Furthermore, Ramírez is not considered a good defensive outfielder – he has shown poor range and an average arm – so any future opportunity for regular playing will likely be as the designated hitter. Until that opportunity presents, it’s likely Ramírez will continue with spot duty as an outfielder and as a pinch hitter off the bench. Ramírez will likely remain at Class-A Long Island for the 2036 season.

LF David Flores

Flores, 20, was a standout for Tallahassee during the 2035 FPL season, finishing the season hitting .352/.379/.688 with 24 runs scored, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 34 RBIs, 3 stolen bases in 3 attempts (1.000 success rate), and a 1.3 WAR in 125 at-bats. Flores, the 18th pick in the 2nd round (51st overall) of the 2035 BBA Amateur Draft, continued to flash the potential that has excited Gamblers’ scouts. After being drafted, Flores joined Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season hitting .326/.351/.572 with 32 runs scored, 14 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs, 27 RBIs, 5 stolen bases in 8 attempts (.625 success rate), and a 2.1 WAR in 215 at-bats. Flores played average defensively in right field, and is believed to have the range and arm to play either corner outfield position effectively. Although Flores has never stolen a significant number of bases, Flores has deceptive speed that could be utilized in future seasons. Flores is currently ranked as the #19 prospect in the Gamblers organization. There is no indication at this point in time as to whether Flores will remain with Class-A Long Island or be promoted to Class-AA Trenton for the 2036 season.

1B Enrique Benítez

Benítez, 21, performed admirably for Tallahassee during the 2035 FPL season, finishing the season hitting .350/.393/.528 with 16 runs scored, 7 doubles, 5 home runs, 25 RBIs, and a 1.1 WAR in 123 at-bats. Benítez, the 23rd pick in the 6th round (180th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft, has continued to show progression, despite an uninspiring season for Class-Short Season A Bogota. Benítez is currently ranked as the Gamblers’ #23 prospect. Benítez finished the 2035 season for Class-Short Season A Bogota hitting .232/.312/.443 with 40 runs scored, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, and a 1.8 WAR in 280 at-bats. Benítez has shown good defensive ability as a first baseman. It’s expected that Benítez will likely be promoted to Class-A Long Island for the 2036 season.

3B Yakamochi Wakatabe

Wakatabe, 19, played sparingly during the 2035 FPL season, but impressed in his limited appearances, finishing the season hitting .333/.333/.500 with 1 run scored, 1 double, 5 RBIs, and a 0.0 WAR in 6 at-bats. Wakatabe, the 16th pick in the 13th round (377th overall) of the 2033 BBA Amateur Draft, projects to be an average hitter in the long-term, but did not impress in his 2035 stint with Class-Short Season A Bogota, finishing the season hitting .223/.358/.366 with 23 runs scored, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 13 RBIs, and a 0.5 WAR in 175 at-bats. Wakatabe has an excellent infield arm, yet he has not had any experience in the field in the minor leagues. Based on his limited range, if he plays at all in the field during the 2036 season, he projects to be an average at-best first baseman, or a below average third baseman. It’s likely that Wakatabe will remain in Class-Short Season A for the 2036 season if the team wants to experiment with him in the field.

C Gabriel Flores

Flores, 20, finished the 2035 FPL season hitting .324/.369/.578 with 14 runs scored, 5 doubles, 7 home runs, 22 RBIs, and a 1.1 WAR in 102 at-bats. Flores, drafted with the 4th pick in the 1st round (4th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft by the Charm City Jimmies prior to being acquired by the Gamblers’ in a trade, is the Gamblers’ #1 catching prospect and the Gamblers’ #6 prospect. Still unpolished in the field, Flores is an excellent arm behind the plate, but has work to do handling pitchers and framing. Flores’ talent makes it a near uncertainty that he’s part of the Gamblers’ roster in the next two to three years, but rumors of a lackadaisical approach and work ethic continues to follow him. Still, Flores had a very good 2035 season for Class-A Long Island, finishing the season hitting .279/.331/.513 with 59 runs scored, 23 doubles, 25 home runs, 66 RBIs, and a 4.3 WAR in 419 at-bats. It’s expected that Flores will be promoted to Class-AA Trenton for the 2036 season.

CF Raúl Castrejón

Castrejón, 20, finished the 2035 FPL season hitting .313/.383/.411 with 20 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 20 RBIs, and a 0.7 WAR in 112 at-bats. Castrejón, drafted with the 15th pick in the 5th round (142nd overall) of the 2034 BBA Amateur Draft, could develop into an above average contact bat with good defensive skills in the outfield. Castrejón should play the corner outfield positions very effectively, but the organization continues to work on his defense in center field to see if he has the capability of performing adequately. Castrejón spent the 2035 season with Class-Short Season A Bogota, where he finished the season hitting .263/.350/.415 with 33 runs scored, 17 doubles, 8 home runs, 28 RBIs, and a 2.2 WAR in 270 at-bats, while also playing an above average center field. It’s expected that Castrejón will be promoted to Class-A Long Island for the 2036 season.

1B / DH Joseph Byrd

Byrd, 22, finished the 2035 FPL season hitting .307/.371/.520 with 21 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs, 16 RBIs, and a 0.8 WAR in 127 at-bats. Byrd, the 23rd pick in the 8th round (236th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft, has little ability to play defense but has an above average, especially against right-handed pitching. Byrd spent the majority of the 2035 season with Class-A Long Island, finishing the season hitting .263/.309/.534 with 48 runs scored, 24 doubles, 21 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a 1.4 WAR in 320 at-bats. His performance with Class-A Long Island earned a promotion to Class-AA Trenton, where he finished the season hitting .500/.500/1.000 with 1 run scored in 2 at-bats. Byrd is expected to remain with Class-AA Trenton for the 2036 season.

RF Jonathon Edmonds

Edmonds, 20, finished the 2035 FPL season hitting .285/.313/.537 with 24 runs scored, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs, 20 RBIs, 2 stolen bases in 5 attempts (.400 success rate), and a 0.6 WAR in 123 at-bats. Edmonds, drafted with the 15th pick in the 9th round (254th overall) of the 2034 BBA Amateur Draft, looks to have the ability to play very well defensively in corner outfield positions, and provides good power at the plate. Overall, he projects to be an average hitter at-best, but he did produce for Class-A Long Island during the 2035 season, hitting .242/.300/.517 with 61 runs scored, 16 doubles, 10 triples, 30 home runs, 75 RBIs, 6 stolen bases in 13 attempts (.462 success rate), and a 2.1 WAR in 458 at-bats. Edmonds has excellent speed, but hasn’t been able to translate that into a high stolen base percentage. It’s believed Edmonds will be promoted to Class-AA Trenton for the 2036 season.

I kind of like the Flores kids. The catcher is especially interesting.
