Boardwalk Empire - 2036.1 - FPL Roster Announced

Tallahassee Gamblers – Roster Selection

The Atlantic City Gamblers officially announced the list of prospects that will participate in the Florida Prospect League (WL) with the organization’s affiliate squad – the Tallahassee Gamblers. Ultimately, the twenty-seven man roster selected by Gamblers’ GM Joshua Biddle included fourteen pitchers and thirteen hitters. The focus of the selections was the mid-level minors, with no selections from the team’s Class-AAA roster. Perhaps, most notably of the omissions, is Atlantic City’s top prospect - right-handed starting pitcher Dusty “Skid Row” Welch. Welch, 20, had a disappointing season for Class-AAA Brooklyn, though helped propel the team to the playoffs. Welch finished the regular season 6-11 with a 4.66 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, a 4.20 FIP, a .370 quality start percentage, 101 strikeouts, and a 2.6 WAR in 156 1/3 innings pitched (27 starts). Welch had one start in the playoffs, pitching seven shutout innings, surrendering four hits and a walk while striking out seven in an 8-7 loss. The team is opting to give Welch a full offseason of rest after a busy couple of years since being drafted by Atlantic City, which has included a rapid ascension through the ranks.

Behind the plate, the selections of Gabriel Flores and Marc-Andre Pare were not surprises as they are the organization’s top two catching prospects. Flores, who will be the FPL starter, needs work on his ability to handle pitchers, but has a stellar arm and a power bat. Pare looks to have a league average bat at-best, but could develop into a plus glove behind the dish. Bungay Martin has been selected as a reserve. The twenty-four year old is a plus defender behind the plate and can draw walks as a hitter.

At first base, the starting gig for Tallahassee will go to Enrique Benitez, who is a very good glove at first and could develop into an above average bat. He has produced and shown improvement at the Class-S A level each year since being drafted by Atlantic City in the 6th round (180th overall) of the 2031 BBA Amateur Draft, but the team hopes to see an improvement to his batting average if he is to ever make the big league club. Joseph Byrd is a productive, promising bat, which is limited by his lack of defense. He began to play first base while with Class-A Long Island, but is more than likely going to be penciled in as Tallahassee’s designated hitter. Class-AA Trenton first baseman Ashton Duncan has been selected as a reserve as the twenty-four year old hit 23 home runs and knocked in 66 runs as the starting first baseman, also flashing an above average glove at first.

The selections for second base, third base, and shortstop are the weakest part of Tallahassee’s roster, but the Gamblers’ organization hopes the group can emerge as a strength. Specializing in defense, the group sports what appear to be average at-best hitting ability. It’s expected that Pedro Mendoza will start at second base, who displays a great glove, above average power, and good plate discipline, but struggles to maintain an acceptable batting average. Daniel Guerra has the tools to play an above average third base, and looks to be an average bat with slightly above average power. Shaun Emmott is expected to start at shortstop, attempting to add some positive momentum after a horrendous 2035 season for Class-A Long Island and Class-AA Trenton. Emmott is looking to recapture the performance he had in 2034 for Class-A Long Island, hitting .300/.342/.457 with 91 runs scored, 18 doubles, 9 triples, 16 home runs, 56 RBIs, 17 stolen bases in 26 attempts (.654 success rate), and a 4.3 WAR in 536 at-bats. Backup infielder Yakamochi Wakatabe has rarely played in the field, has the skills to potentially play at third and first base, and looks to have above average power and plate discipline potential. Clement Besson had a miserable season at the plate for Class-S A Bogota, but has upper echelon defensive potential in the infield and the ability to play effectively in the outfield. He has the potential to become a super utility player if he can prove to be decent with the bat.

The outfield looks to be the most intriguing aspect of Tallahassee’s offense with corner outfielders David Flores (2035 2nd round pick) and Jonathan Edmonds, and center fielder Raul Castrejon. Each player looks to have the potential to ascend to the Gamblers’ roster in the future, have been productive, and have proven competent with the glove. Jose Guerra, who was productive in Rookie Ball, was selected as a reserve, as was Mark Sas, a two-way player who was a bit of a surprise omission.

Expected to start for Tallahassee in a six-man rotation is right-handers David Perea, Miguel Pena, Yoshitoshi Ota, and Torazo Tanaka, and left-handers Yu Vgotmael, Hungary Denk. Lucio Gomez, Ignacio Martinez, and Manuel Rivera are expected to compete for the closer role.
