Five Atlantic City Gamblers File for Free Agency

Five members of the 2034 Atlantic City Gamblers’ roster have officially filed for free agency:

Right-handed relief pitcher Sebastien Durand

Durand, 38, signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Atlantic City Gamblers organization on 12/27/2033. Durand finished the 2034 season 7-7 with 38 saves in 47 opportunities (.809 save percentage), a 3.46 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, a 4.50 FIP, a .270 OAVG, a .294 BABIP, a .154 IRS%, 1 hold, 54 strikeouts, and a 0.0 WAR in 75 1/3 innings pitched (71 appearances), resulting in his selection to the 2034 Brewster Baseball Association All-Star game. For his BBA career, Durand is 67-62 with 59 saves in 81 opportunities (.728 save percentage), a 3.72 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 4.34 FIP, a .249 OAVG, a .275 BABIP, a .628 QS%, 1 shutout, a .283 IRS%, 59 holds, 753 strikeouts, and a 6.5 WAR in 1,094 innings pitched (530 appearances, 94 starts). Scouts rate Durand as having 7/7/7 stuff/movement/control ratings; 8/8 fastball/curveball ratings; a 2 stamina rating; an 8 hold runners rating; a groundball tendency; a normal (3/4) arm slot; and velocity that peaks at 93-95 miles per hour. Durand filled the closer role for the Gamblers, and despite being selected to the 2034 BBA All-Star game, it appears as though the Gamblers are prepared to go into a different direction.

Right-handed relief pitcher Esteban Gil

Gil, 30, signed a one-year, $1,500,070 contract with the Atlantic City Gamblers organization on 12/27/2033. Gil finished the 2034 season 2-1 with 1 save in 3 opportunities (.333 save percentage), a 3.02 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, a 5.02 FIP, a .255 OAVG, a .264 BABIP, a .294 IRS%, 24 strikeouts, and a -0.2 WAR in 41 2/3 innings pitched (20 appearances). For his BBA career, Gil is 59-52 with 9 saves in 14 opportunities (.643 save percentage), a 3.76 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, a 3.76 FIP, a .255 OAVG, a .264 BABIP, a .500 QS%, 2 shutouts, a .309 IRS%, 736 strikeouts, and a 21.0 WAR in 1,068 innings pitched (240 appearances, 160 starts). Scouts rate Gil as having 6/7/5 stuff/movement/control ratings; 7/7/3/5 fastball/curveball/changeup/screwball ratings; a 7 stamina rating; a 5 hold runners rating; a neutral groundball/flyball tendency; a normal (3/4) arm slot; and velocity that peaks at 91-93 miles per hour. Gil was very popular in Atlantic City and brought an admirable work ethic, but the front office appears ready to move on to a different option in 2035.

Right fielder Pedro Canales

Canales, 33, signed a minor league contract with the Atlantic City Gamblers organization on 7/2/2034. Canales was immediately promoted to the Gamblers’ active roster, where he finished the 2034 season hitting .248/.303/.442 with 26 runs scored, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 21 RBIs, 2 stolen bases in 7 attempts (.286 success rate), and a -0.6 WAR in 165 at-bats. In 131 innings in right field, Canales recorded 1 error (.976 fielding percentage), 3 assists, a 2.75 range factor, a -4.7 zone rating, and a .854 defensive efficiency; in 3 innings in left field, Canales recorded 0 errors (1.000 fielding percentage), a 6.00 range factor, a +0.0 zone rating, and a 1.018 defensive efficiency. For his BBA career, Canales is hitting .283/.340/.522 with 663 runs scored, 193 doubles, 35 triples, 255 home runs, 710 RBIs, 133 stolen bases in 246 attempts (.541 success rate), and a 12.8 WAR in 4,314 at-bats. Scouts rate Canales as having 6/5/8/7/9 contact/gap/power/eye/avoid K ratings; 6/6/7 speed/stealing/baserunning ratings; a 3 left field rating; a 2 right field rating; and 2/6/8 outfield range/outfield error/outfield arm ratings. Canales brought a decent power bat to the Gamblers’ lineup upon his signing and promotion to the major league level, providing the team an additional option after the removal of Jorge Dominguez from the starting lineup, and the failure of Juan Cruz to hold down the starting right field position – or a spot on the Gamblers’ roster for that matter.

Second baseman Benedict Gonzalez

Gonzalez, 32, signed a minor league contract with the Atlantic City Gamblers organization on 9/3/2034 and was subsequently promoted to the Gamblers’ active roster. Gonzalez finished the 2034 season hitting 1.000/1.000/4.000 with 1 run scored, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, and a 0.1 WAR in 1 at-bat. In 5 innings at second base, Gonzalez recorded 0 errors (1.000 fielding percentage), a 7.20 range factor, a -0.0 zone rating, and a .993 defensive efficiency. For his BBA career, Gonzalez has hit .159/.159/.333 with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 10 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), and a -0.2 WAR. Scouts rate Gonzalez as having 4/6/7/3/3 contact/gap/power/eye/avoid K ratings / potential ratings; 5/9/9 speed/stealing/baserunning ratings; a 6 second base rating; a 4 shortstop rating; and 5/7/4/9 infield range/infield error/infield arm/turn double play ratings. Gonzalez was a September addition to the Gamblers’ roster based on his bat, leadership, and work ethic -- the South Plainsfield, New Jersey made his only at-bat count by knocking it out of the park.

Third baseman Manny Silva

Silva, 32, signed a minor league contract with the Atlantic City Gamblers on 9/3/2034, which followed his release from the California Crusaders organization. Silva was acquired by California from the Phoenix Talons along with left-handed starting pitcher / relief pitcher Harry Considine and first baseman Drew Hair for snack considerations on 5/12/2034. Although he was promoted to the Gamblers’ roster in September, Silva did not appear in a game for the team. During the 2034 season, he played for the Phoenix Talons and Class-A Hollywood of the California Crusaders’ organization. For Phoenix, Silva finished the season hitting .180/.208/.281 with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 12 RBIs, and a -0.5 WAR in 89 at-bats. In 206 innings at third base for Phoenix, Silva recorded 3 errors (.961 fielding percentage), 7 double plays, a 3.19 range factor, +0.9 zone rating, and a 1.031 defensive efficiency. For Class-A Hollywood, Silva went hitless in his lone plate appearance. For his BBA career, Silva has hit .240/.287/.385 with 256 runs scored, 102 doubles, 2 triples, 82 home runs, 292 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 1 attempt (1.000 fielding percentage), and a 6.3 WAR in 2,425 at-bats. Scouts rate Silva as having 5/6/7/4/6 contact/gap/power/eye/avoid K ratings; 1/1/4 speed/stealing/baserunning ratings; 1/7/2 second base/third base/shortstop ratings; and 5/7/10/3 infield range/infield error/infield arm/turn double play ratings. Silva fit in well with the Gamblers in his brief stint with the organization, helping to bridge what appeared to be a possible rift starting between the players and manager Daniel Berrocales.
