Boardwalk Empire #3 2025: Campos Wins #200.

Post by Cliche » Mon Mar 07, 2016 6:38 am

It hasn't been a banner year for the four-time All-Star and 2020 Nebraska winner, but Gabriel Campos did hit a big milestone this month, collecting his 200th career MBWBA victory in fitting fashion with a complete game against Havana on September 7th. He becomes the 32nd pitcher in league history to reach the 200-win plateau. He allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk, with 5 strikeouts in the victory which lifted his record to 15-10 on the season.

It was the 35 year-old's second consecutive complete game, having thrown one earlier in the month against Montreal. It also ran his consecutive win streak to four, bouncing back nicely from some earlier struggles. While he's not the pitcher he was at his peak, "Full Pack" is still a workhorse. His 9 complete games this season place him second behind Birmingham star Nelson Ramirez and his 121 throughout his career place him second only to long-time Las Vegas Hustler Christopher "Trooper" Stoller who left the game with 151.

Nelson Ramirez is also the only starter who can boast a lower BB/9 this year than Campos, who currently sits at 0.9. He's also third in K/BB rate (7.1) behind Ramirez and Havana flamethrower (and the man he faced when picking up win #200) Ignacio Rodriguez. Campos is not the dominant force he once was, but he's still been a key pitcher for us again this season because he's reliable. Even him pitching poorly can usually result in 6+ innings of work. He's also been great so far down the stretch with a 3.08 ERA and 0.93, looking very much like vintage Campos in those 9 starts.

I'm just hoping he can carry that performance down the stretch and into the playoffs, where we're going to need him to fight our way through the always competitive Frick post-season slate. We're going to make the playoffs, but the division is still wide open as we hold just a 1.5 game lead over Carolina with 6 games to play. Three of those are of course against... Carolina. If Campos can give us a big outing against them, that could really swing this division race in the final days of the season. I'd really rather avoid a Wildcard showdown with Birmingham if at all possible.

Go Campos! After leaving California as the clubs all-time leader in many categories, he's played on some good teams, even though his individual numbers haven't been the best.

He's certainly a prototypical workhorse, but like Stoller, is that contributing to an early decline?
