After two consecutive seasons at 83-79, the Gamblers made the jump to the big time. With an additional 6 wins, the club claimed its first Frick League Atlantic title since then moved over from Brooklyn. The Gamblers held off a horrid August and September to hold onto the lead and division crown. The Gamblers were a combined 23-3 in the seasons last 2 months and a once double digit lead dwindled to nothing. In fact the club lead Hackensack and Buffalo by as little a one game over the past week before finishing 2 games up on them to end the year.
A large part of the Gamblers success had to do with an offense that wouldnt stop. The club finished atop the MBBA Frick League in runs scored, home runs, extra base hits, and OPS. The club finished with 9 players in double digit homeruns, with 2 guys - lead off hitter second baseman Tony Nalley, and superstar centerfielder Ross White, leading the way with 41 a piece. Despite missing the start of the year to injury, third baseman slash right fielder Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson smacked 36 bombs of his own.
They needed all th eoffense they could get. Aside from 17 game winner Jim Brochtrup, and rookie reliever Art Messer, no one was effective for the Gamblers from the hill. At least not on a regular basis. The club finished 9th in runs allowed. Brochtrup finished 17-8 with a 2.99 ERA and Messer posted a 1.47 ERA in 73.1 innings for the Gamblers.
With a shortened team best 281 BA, and a improved 4.37 ERa, the Gamblers expected more than 89 wins. They will take what they can get, and look to improve upon that number in 1999.

While your offense looks awesome on paper, if you made some more defensive adjustments it would be downright frightening. Johnson was the worst RF in the league, hands down.

Oh I know, but I like having him in our lineup. We do have the luxury of making some moves with our offense and still keeping it as one of the leagues best units.recte44 wrote:While your offense looks awesome on paper, if you made some more defensive adjustments it would be downright frightening.
