Casinotes 53.2- The Future is Bruno

If you’re familiar with the Disney animated film “Encanto” you know what I mean. We don’t talk about the future, no no no no…

Since I took the reins in Atlantic City, everyone who sees me in the hallway of the team offices makes some remark about how in a year or two I’m going to face “Capmageddon”, a situation where I won’t be able to afford any kind of a decent team at all. I suppose the sympathy of my coworkers is better than the undisguised contempt my El Paso staff used to show towards me, but frankly I’m tired of hearing about it. I’m quite aware of the situation, thank you, but for now I’ve got a pretty good team for once in my life, and dang it, I’m going to enjoy it.

I even feel like I’ve done a decent job of maintaining it, given the fact that I can’t sign anyone to a multiyear contract because of… Bruno. Let me enumerate.

-The only real salary dump I’ve done so far is a trade of DH Cinema Jones. What I got for him was secondary to the monetary aspect, but it turned out to be Pete Brace, who I had in El Paso. Pete had a pretty up-and-down career for me, but this year I’m trying a new tack: in his latest incarnation he’ll be a utility guy who plays several positions and provides some right-handed pop off the bench. And he’s off the books after this year.

-To replace Cinema as the DH I signed Jean-Francois Hamon. He’s 33, but he can still run and hit with power, and he’s been hitting well in AAA. He can fill in at a corner OF spot without totally embarrassing the franchise, too.

-I didn’t see any first basemen on the roster that really inspired me, so I was lucky to get Oliverio Luna on another one-year deal. And then I traded a couple of lower-level minor league guys to Sacramento for Jesus Cruz, who’ll start in AAA but might be able to replace Luna or Hamon next year.

-I lost a really good starting pitcher, Dan Small, to free agency. His replacement will be either Jayden Nicholls, a refugee from the GBC, or Matt Schneider, a waiver claim. Neither is Dan Small, but they each have something I can dream on.

So, all in all, I think there’s enough left here to be in the playoff hunt all season. On the other hand, if I’m wrong and we’re way back as the trade deadline approaches… well, then we might have to talk about Bruno…
