Gamblers Announce Minor League Retirees

The Atlantic City Gamblers formally announced the retirement of six minor league players within the Gamblers' organization, which included three players at the Class-AAA level, two players at the Class-AA level, and one player the Rookie Class level.

First baseman António Valéncia

Valéncia, 26, was drafted with the 10th pick in the 16th round (488th overall) of the 2036 BBA Amateur Draft by the Gamblers. Valéncia spent the 2044 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn, where he finished the season hitting .185/.261/.284 with 4 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 home run, 7 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), and a -0.7 WAR in 93 plate appearances (24 games). Valéncia found his most consistent success in his five-year Class-A career, where he finishes his career hitting .251/.326/.466 with 102 runs scored, 36 doubles, 3 triples, 31 home runs, 93 RBIs, and a 1.9 WAR in 705 plate appearances (201 games). His most productive single season within the Gamblers' minor league system was his 2041 season with Class-A Long Island, where he finished the season hitting .280/.338/.513 with 40 runs scored, 12 doubles, 17 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a 1.6 WAR in 296 plate appearances (80 games). Valéncia was an average defensive first baseman, but failed to consistently display the consistent offensive stroke necessary to receive regular at-bats.

Left-handed pitcher Paul Jones

Jones, 34, joined the Gamblers organization on a minor league contract in January 2044. Jones was assigned to Class-AAA Brooklyn where he made 29 appearances / 8 starts, finishing the season 4-7 with a 5.93 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 5.73 FIP, .272 opponents' average, .874 opponents' OPS, 66 strikeouts, and a -0.9 WAR in 74 1/3 innings pitched. Jones joined the Gamblers' following a three-year stint with the Charlotte Cougars from 2041 through 2043, where he went 16-18 with a 5.02 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, a 5.38 FIP, a .289 opponents' average, a .861 opponents' OPS, 234 strikeouts, and a 1.4 WAR in 322 2/3 innings pitched (108 appearances / 31 starts). He also pitched for the Nashville Bluebirds (then Goats) organization from 2037 through 2039, going 5-6 with 4 saves in 5 opportunities (.800 success rate), a 4.80 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, a 5.38 FIP, a .274 opponents' average, a .859 opponents' OPS, 104 strikeouts, and a -0.1 WAR in 105 innings pitched (47 appearances, 11 starts).

Right-handed pitcher Mike García

García, 30, joined the Gamblers organization as a minor league free agent in August 2038. Prior to the signing, García was drafted by the San Fernando Bears with the 26th pick in the 13th round (416th overall) of the 2037 BBA Amateur Draft, but failed to sign. García is best known to Gamblers fans through is time with Class-AA Trenton, where he finished his four-year career from 2040 through 2043 with a 46-24 record, a 4.11 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, a 3.99 FIP, a .253 opponents' average, a .734 opponents' OPS, 534 strikeouts, and a 12.1 WAR in 593 innings pitched (103 starts). His best season was the 2041 season with Class-A Long Island, finishing the season 16-5 with a 3.49 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a 3.38 FIP, a .250 opponents' average, a .708 opponents' OPS, 131 strikeouts, and a 3.8 WAR in 144 1/3 innings pitched (25 starts). García was also part of two championship Tallahassee Gamblers winter league seasons, finishing his winter league career 7-2 with a 2.95 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, a 3.33 FIP, a .223 opponents' average, a .609 opponents' OPS, 100 strikeouts, and a 3.0 WAR in 91 2/3 innings pitched (13 starts).

Outfielder Sadayoshi Aoki

Aoki, 25, joined the Gamblers organization out of Japan on a minor league contract signed in November 2037, subsequently reporting to the Gamblers' international complex. Primarily playing as a left fielder, but with the ability to play center field in a pinch, Aoki provided above average defense in left field, but failed to adequately establish an offensive presence to receive regular at-bats once he was promoted to Class-AA Trenton straight from Rookie Class for the 2043 season. Aoki finished his two-year career at the Class-AA level hitting .137/.233/.196 with 19 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 RBIs, and a -1.0 WAR in 172 plate appearances (64 games). Aoki finished his three-year career in Rookie Class hitting .248/.380/.363 with 117 runs scored, 35 doubles, 7 triples, 6 home runs, 57 RBIs, 26 stolen bases in 36 attempts (.722 success rate), and a 3.4 WAR in 710 plate appearances (156 games). His best season, measured by WAR, was the 2041 season with Rookie Class Albany, where he finished the season hitting .227/.323/.386 with 40 runs scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs, 21 RBIs, 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts (.923 success rate), and a 2.4 WAR in 303 plate appearances (66 games).

Catcher Paco Bueno

Bueno, 19, joined the Gamblers organization out of Puerto Rico on a minor league contract signed in January 2042, subsequently reporting to the Gamblers' international complex. Bueno joined Rookie Class Albany prior to the start of the 2042 season and spent three seasons with the organization from 2042-2044, finishing his career at the Rookie Class level hitting .223/.374/.260 with 49 runs scored, 7 doubles, 2 home runs, 55 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), and a -0.4 WAR in 442 plate appearances. He finished the 2044 season hitting .254/.385/.333 with 17 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 22 RBIs, and a 0.3 WAR in 156 plate appearances. Bueno tendered his retirement in order to pursue his education.
