This time of year is always one of the most painful. A time in which I have to decide which players to send down or potentially cut loose to fit the 27 man roster.

"Well we all agree that Patrick Hawkins should be the first guy we waive?" I say to the small circle of staff with me, including newly signed manager, Stafford Carter.

"I think that would be wise, he still has some potential but it's very unlikely he'll be ready for major league ball." replied Carter.

With that, it takes our roster down to 28. For the most part I sent some players back down to Triple A ball last week to make this process a bit easier, however we were now stuck again on deciding the final player to remove.

"What about Elmer Willis?" says Carter. "He can be sent down without having to go through waivers, wouldn't have to risk losing another player."

I shake my head. "No Willis needs to stay up, let's be honest, Gonzalez can't hit lefties anymore so we'll need him to platoon, plus Willis can also play first.

"Okay, what about Troy Andrews? He was in the minors all of last year, might be able to slip through waivers?"

Again I disagree. "Honestly I was planning to have him be the fifth starter, at least until Cole returned."

"Well then who do you suggest?"

It was a good question, I've been listen to what others have been saying, but hadn't really come up with a name I'd consider dropping, and then it hit me. "What about Sam Fisher?"

"Maybe? I don't know man he's done pretty well the past few years even if his stuff isn't that great."

"I won't say that he hasn't been a solid reliever but it looks like his stuff has gone down again and his spring training has been subpar at best, I think I'd rather have Andrews over him."

Carter looks at me perplexed, but I feel as though I'm making the right decision.

"Plus if some team does end up claiming him we'll free up about $3 million." I add.

"You're the GM, I'll support whichever decision you make."

"Alright, well I'll start filing the paper to DFA Fis-"

WAIT

My assistant barges through the door, she's practically out of breath.

"Serrano.. he's hurt his elbow.. complaining it's sore."

"Shit.. how long do they think he'll be out for?"

"Nothing serious, day to day for about 3 weeks."

I got to think about this rationally, sure I could have Serrano play through the injury but what if he aggrevates it? At this rate he'll only miss the first two weeks of the season which would be better than potentially losing him long term. Plus it leaves another advantage..

"Alright I'll place him on the 7 day IL, that'll take our opening day roster to 27, we can decide later."

Carter nods, "I agree, plus this'll give Fisher a chance to change your mind. personally I think you should start him over Andrews."

"You really think so? I just don't see it."

"Give him a chance, if he doesn't perform well, then put Andrews in."

I ponder this for a moment.. guess it wouldn't hurt to see him start a few games, though I'll doubt he'll do well enough to change my mind. I mean after all, I'm the GM, and I've never been wrong about any decision I've made in my life. Nope, not at all...
