MOUNTIES SPRING FOR TRADE AFTER OLIVARES' DEVASTATING INJURY
May 27, 2056
What has been a great start to the Mounties 2056 campaign begins with arguably it's first major blow to the team. Marcus Olivares, who is currently having a great season, tore his UCL and will be forced to miss the remainder of the 2056 season and a majority of the 2057 season. The injury occurred at the bottom of the first inning on Friday night's game against the Valencia Stars. After allowing a lead-off double, he faced Valencia CF Habib bin Ameen. On a 1-0 pitch, bin Ameen grounded out, but all eyes were on Olivares who immediately grabbed his right arm after the pitch. He threw his glove in frustration and pain as the medical staff rushed onto the field. The ballpark of 32,000 fans were silenced as they knew what they were witnessing. As Olivares walked off the field he received a much deserved standing ovation. Olivares was quietly having an All-Star caliber season, in 10 games he had stats of:
4-4 record, 2.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 27 K
"It hurts to lose a player of his caliber," said Wharram after the 3-1 defeat, "We will do everything we can to get him healthy again."
Of course what will remain interesting is Olivares contract situation. The team still has two arbitration years left, whether they will agree to an extension for a player who probably won't pitch fulltime again until 2058 remains to be seen.
After the injury talks picked up with a trade involving the Yellow Springs Nine, and a deal was made to potentially fill the gap left by Olivares.
The Mounties are sending prospects RF Joshua Jones, and LF Negussu Adisa to the Nine, and in exchange are receiving P Alejandro Morín and P Reese Newsome. Morin had severely struggled last year with the Nine. 5-15 with a 6.49 ERA isn't exactly an attractive stat-line, especially since he has struggled being in AAA this year. However a change of scenery could be just what he needs, and the Mounties have shown they can bring players back to their good forms. Morin will reportedly get the start in tonight's game against Nashville.
Newsome has been a solid reliever the last two years, and will bolster a bullpen in desperate need of some help. He's pitched in 24 games so far with a 3-3 record, 3.86 ERA and 38 K's compared to just 4 walks. He has an elite arsenal with a fastball, curveball and a deadly changeup that makes batters swing and miss. Yellow Springs will also be retaining 50% of both players salary, which will save the team roughly $1.5 million.
The Mounties sit 2nd in the Frick League Pacific with a 33-20 record.

Going from a 10 movement starting pitcher to a 2 movement starting pitcher will be an interesting experiment.

tough to lose Olivares when he was off to such a good start. and a much better clubhouse presence than Morin

I can't imagine Newsome will start. Morin has some potential, but I'd run out of patience and have a logjam of potentially good pitchers who will be much cheaper in the years to come. Morin drove me to fits - he shouldn't be sucking this much.BaseClogger wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 12:54 pmGoing from a 10 movement starting pitcher to a 2 movement starting pitcher will be an interesting experiment.
