2055 DIAMOND GLOVE WINNER SIGNS 1-YEAR DEAL WITH MOUNTIES

Filling in a second basemen spot left vacant by the departing Mahine Karetu was already quite the task, but to do it with a team near pushing at the cap made things even more difficult for Aaron Wharram. Karetu had a solid offensive year for the Mounties, but was absolutely horrendous on the defensive side of the ball, finishing last among all other second basemen in the BBA in ZR (-15.3). Paying a premium for a DH didn't seem to be the correct move as the team already has Jorge Guitterez in that role for the 2056 season. Wharram wanted a player that could hit efficiently and play at least average defense.

Enter Bob Irwin, who just last year with the now Charlotte Flyers (great name change by the way) won the Diamond glove award... for first base. I know what you're thinking, didn't the team just sign Manny Toledo a couple weeks ago? Yes they did, but what makes Irwin a great signing is that he can also play second base. Granted he hasn't played in the position much in that last few years but anybody should play better in that position than Karetu.Irwin has has also earned a reputation of being likeable teammate who is high baseball IQ and works on the game harder than most. Last year he bat a very good .298 AVG and batted in 88 runs. He also stole 17 bases and struck-out just 75 times. Though he only hit 4 homeruns, it sounds like Wharram intends to name him as the lead-off batter for the 2056 Mounties.

"We are incredibly pleased to have Mr. Irwin join us," says Wharram. "We feel that he is the potential final piece of the puzzle to making a run at the postseason this year."
