We have seen many players over the past number of years possess the ability to both hit and pitch. However, very rarely do we see an actual two way player in the BBA. It's even rarer to see someone succeed in both hitting and pitching at the big league level. Well, it looks like there will be a mini experiment going on in AAA this season. This experiment will be in regards to Daniel Avila.
Avila was drafted at #3 overall in the 2040 draft. The 2040 draft was one of the worst drafts in recent years. No bias at all. Avila's ceiling has always been a mid-rotation starter. However, after 3 bad years in Vancouver as a starting pitcher, it seems that he will never start a BBA game again. 1 year ago Avila suffered a torn flexor tendon and missed the entire 2045 season. It seems that his velocity has noticeably fallen and his stuff doesn't have the same bite. At best, he will be a middle reliever if he comes back to Vancouver. However, given that the Mounties don't have many third base prospects in the upper minors, it looks like Avila will be starting the 2046 season in AAA as a two way player. He will be the starting third baseman and a middle reliever. He hasn't been given any chance to show his hitting abilities in previous seasons. However, the possibility of becoming a full time third baseman is not that crazy. Avila projects to be an average to below average third baseman, both defensively and offensively.
How will this experiment go? Well, if Avila wants to get back to the BBA, especially as a new wave of prospects will be making their debuts this season, Avila is going to have to embrace this new role. It's not impossible to see Avila take an at bat at the major league level this season. Good luck to Avila. We are rooting for you.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this. Maybe Ata will make the transition.

Re: TVT 2046.6 - An Experiment
I've used Faical Engeitado as both a hitter and a pitcher in Portland with "some" success.
I started using him as an RP in 2043 (small use late) and then in 2044 let him play both OF vs LHP and be an RP. He was a hitter only prior to then.
Now he's only an RP because I have more OF depth.
Hitting Stats: 2041-2045
1,567 At-Bats
.262/.323/.423 with 39 homeruns and 162 RBI.
Pitching Stats: 2044-2046
49 appearances for 90.0 innings pitched
4.10 ERA; 1.53 WHIP; 1-8 record with 83 strikeouts.
He had a 0.7 WAR last year as a reliever. In 2042 he had a 0.9 WAR as an OF.

I often have been tempted to let Jaramillo and Casson hit in some capacity but I have not taken the plunge for fear of injury.
