TVT 2044.17 - 1st Round Draft History

Post by StormZ_23 » Thu Oct 01, 2020 4:22 pm

The 2044 amateur draft ended a little while ago. The draftees have been settled with their respective teams for a while now. However, we are not here to talk about the 2044 draft. A league insider has already made a feature article detailing all of the notable draft picks from the most recent draft. Today, we are going to talk about the 1st round draft history under GM Taylor Bettencourt. He took over team in late 2036. However, his draft wasn't until 2037. So, we will start from 2037 and look at every first round pick from that point.

2037: 1st round, 9th overall
Player: CF Angel Gonzalez
Career WAR: 24.4 (722 Games)
This former first round pick is arguably the face of the Mounties franchise. Or at the very least shares that role with his outfield companions. The 2041 FL Silk recipient has enjoyed quite the run of dominance with the Mounties. Many already consider him to be one of the team's best draft picks of all time. This season, he is looking like a Silk candidate. At the very least he should be an all star. Of course we would love to see him be a Mountie for life, but that's currently up in the air. For now, let's enjoy his greatness.

2038: 1st round, 9th overall
Player: RF Jeffrey Smith
Career WAR: 20.5 (851 Games)
Smith was one of the most developed players in the 2038 draft pool. He was put on the fast track to the majors as less than year after he was drafted, he made his major league debut. While he hasn't shown the power he had in 2041, you can slot Smith for 30 home runs and over 100 RBI's every season. He hasn't had the huge Silk level season like Gonzalez, but with Smith regaining form in 2043, it's likely he produces 5 WAR per season for the next few years at the very least. Now on a 6 year contract, Smith is likely to stay in Vancouver for the long haul. But, things can change.

2039: 1st round, 5th overall
Player: SP Richie Vanness
Career WAR: 1.1 (17 GS)
When Vanness was drafted, he was a very raw prospect. But he showed lots of promise. He had the makings of a future ace. After a couple of seasons in the minor leagues, he finally got into his groove. He started to show progress with many of his pitches, including his changeup. However, a season ending injury in 2042 halted his development. Once considered a top 15 prospect, Vanness is now a back end starter. He's not a bad pitcher by any means, but Vanness will be one of the great what if's in Mounties history. If he became the ace he was destined to be, would the Mounties be in the situation they are in now?

2040: 1st round, 3rd overall
Player: SP Daniel Avila
Career WAR: 2.2 WAR (55 GS)
2040 had one of the most underwhelming draft classes in recent memory. A terrible year to be in the top 5. While Avila was considered a decent prospect at the time, he was never considered a guy with huge potential. Avila's potential has always been that of a #3 starter. Of course, that's not too bad. However, Avila has struggled during his time in the big leagues. He may need a change of scenery.

2041: 1st round, 12th overall
Player: 2B Francisco Martinez
Currently the Mounties #2 prospect, Martinez is en route to becoming the Mounties starting second baseman. He won't win any gold gloves, but he should be serviceable in the position. Worst case scenario is he becomes a first baseman. However, his bat is what will potentially earn him some all star recognition. Martinez is killing it in AA right now, accumulating 3.5 WAR in 65 games. If the Mounties felt he was ready, he would have been called up by now. It's possible he comes up in September and earns the starting second base job next season. The future is very bright for Martinez.

2042: 1st round, 25th overall
Player: SP Jose Torres
The #95 prospect in the league has some of the best pitches in the minor leagues. Want an example of how great his stuff is? He threw a no hitter last season and he is currently 12-1 in 14 starts. He is on a similar trajectory to Martinez, in that he will likely see time in September and earn a roster spot next year. Torres isn't going to be a top of the rotation starter, but he can easily be a mid rotation starter. Considering many of the current Mounties big leaguers don't have stuff like Torres, it will be interesting to see how Torres adjusts to the ballpark. If he is successful, the Mounties may have to consider finding pitchers with stuff like Torres.

2043: 1st round, 19th overall
Player: 2B Pete Brace
Brace is a very interesting prospect. He has the ability to play anywhere on the field, literally anywhere. The issue is his bat. If Brace is going to become an everyday player, he needs to work on his batting skills. He is currently in rookie league, his second stint with the team. He is performing very well at the moment. At only 20 years old, Brace has plenty of time to gain some batting skills.

2044: 1st round, 16th overall
Player: SP Kenny Kelly
This year's first round pick was Kenny Kelly. He was one of the most developed pitchers coming out of the draft. He isn't spectacular at a singular area of pitching, but he shows the ability to produce consistent results. He is almost the definition of average. That's what you get with high floor, low ceiling guys. Nonetheless, he could reach the majors as early as next year.

2/4 so far, and looking like potentially 4/6 with martinez and torres. Couple that with your two hits being cornerstone type guys and that is a good track record (at least with bats).
