TVT 2044.1 - Jeffrey Smith Extension

Alright we are finally in the off-season and it already looks like GM Taylor Bettencourt is making good of his promises. If you don't remember, a little while ago we released an article detailing an interview with the Mounties general manager. The main takeaway from that interview was Bettencourt saying "all 3 will stay!" What is this in reference too? Well, as you may know, the Mounties have three of the best young outfielders in the league. Bettencourt promised that he will re-sign all three of these players to multi-year extensions over the coming seasons. Well, we found out one of these players has already committed to Vancouver.

The team re-signed 24 year old right fielder Jeffrey Smith to a 6 year extension worth $94.5 million. The extension begins in 2044, meaning Smith foregoes his final arbitration year. This seems to be a team friendly deal as the most lucrative year in the contract is in 2044. The 6th year will also be a team option. Smith had his best season in 2043, leading the Mounties in batting average and RBI's. He also recorded the most WAR in his career with 5.9. Smith is still pretty young, so no one should expect a massive decline any time soon *cough* Menne *cough*.

The Mounties may not seem themselves as playoff ready in 2044, considering the amount of money spread out through the payroll. But once David Noboru's contract runs out in a couple of seasons, the future wave of Mounties prospects should be ready to join the outfield core. Will they be able to repeat 2041? Only time will tell. For now, let's celebrate in knowing that the team has kept its promise for the time being.
