The annual BBA amateur draft has just been completed. Unfortunately, the draft class this year wasn't the best. Although, it's possible we may never top the bloated draft classes from the late 2030's. The world needs to be balanced and this is what happens. Anyway, the Mounties picked at the #19 spot. When your team is in the last half of the draft, that's when the scouting department needs to shine. There is always a diamond in the rough. Last year the Mounties picked at the #25 spot and drafted Jose Torres, who has shown potential to stick in a big league rotation. Given the Mounties are in a higher spot this time around, the scouting department should have no problem finding another gem.
Who was rumored to be on the Mounties' radar? First let's look at Joe Jones. Jones was one of the three main players on the team's radar. As he is a knuckleballer, this intrigued the team because they hadn't drafted a knuckleballer in many, many years. Ultimately, as he is 22 years old, he is likely a finished product. His knuckleball is decent, but his movement rating is a bit low for a knuckleballer. So, the team passed. Next, the team looked at 6'8" right hander Mike Jayne. Reportedly, the Mounties preferred Jayne over Jones. However, there are a few reasons as to why the Mounties passed on Jayne. He was drafted by Boise in 2040 at #10 overall. He didn't sign with the team and went to college. Apart from an above average 2042 season, Jayne struggled in college. Couple that with a worrying injury history, the team decided to go in a different direction.
What direction did the team take? They chose Pete Brace. Brace is an 18 year old high school prospect out of Hauterive, Quebec. For an 18 year old, his ability to hit for power is ahead of some college players. He is projected to have an average power bat at the major league level. But what makes him most appealing is his ability to play anywhere on the field. The team could train him anywhere they want. This would make him very valuable at the major league level if his bat develops. Couple that with his work ethic, it looks like the team has found someone they can work with at the #19 spot.

Brace is intriguing guy around the diamond and an interesting pick. I had Jayne as my 2nd choice behind Simons and nearly took him.

Brace is a nice player for sure in this draft. Could be a solid 2B if you go that route with him.
