TVT 2043.6 - Leaked Financial Documents

Post by StormZ_23 » Mon Jun 08, 2020 7:41 pm

Baseball is a business. Turning a profit is not necessarily on the mind of players and fans, but the owner cares. The owner of the Mounties, Chris Fraser, took over the team before the 2042 season as a result of his father, Simon Fraser, passing away. While Mr. Fraser has not said much since he has taken over the team, it is apparent that unless the team starts winning again, the team is going to lose money. How do we know this? Well, some hackers on reddit decided to infiltrate the Mounties network and take their documents. These documents were leaked late last night. What were these hackers' motives? Well, we do not know. However, we have to assume they are fans of a team in the pacific division likely Portland, California, or Seattle.

There is a lot to unpack in these files and today we will look at the financial records and projections for the team. Clearly, the team is worried about their future in this city. While, the team was reportedly making profits and storing those profits away in forms of "cash", this all changed after last season. Let's look at the projections.

2041:
Previous Balance: $32,863,165

2042:
Budget: $120,000,000
Revenue: $101,452,042
Expenses: $95,205,598
Season Profit: $6,246,444
Balance: $26,246,444

2043 (Projected):
Budget: $110,000,000
Revenue: $94,721,379
Expenses: $101,175,500
Season Profit: -$6,454,121
Balance: $13,545,879

2044 (Projected):
Budget: $95,000,000
Revenue: $94,721,379
Expenses: $109,743,000
Season Profit: $-15,021,621
Balance: $4,978,379

2045 (Projected):
Budget: $95,000,000
Revenue: $94,721,379
Expenses: $89,378,500
Season Profit: $5,342,879
Balance: $25,342,879

What do these numbers show? Well, in 2041, as the team had brought in playoff revenue, they recorded record profits. In 2042, due to the lack of playoff revenue and arbitration numbers getting higher, the team lost money. Through 2043 and 2044 it's projected that this downward trend will continue. In fact, we have a leaked document that states earlier this off-season, GM Taylor Bettencourt asked for a $120,000,000 budget, and the owner gave it to him. However, around a month later, the owner decided to take away $10,000,000 from the budget, hence why the budget is only $110,000,000. This could continue to be the case down the road. The lower profit margin also has something to do with attendance numbers dropping as ticket prices drop.

Attendence w/Record:
2036: 1,320,633 (63-99)
2037: 1,631,491 (75-87)
2038: 1,173,374 (68-94)
2039: 1,636,379 (63-99)
2040: 1,731,540 (82-80)
2041: 2,588,026, $17.25 ticket (97-65)
2042: 2,158,323, $14.50 ticket, 15,947 season tickets (74-88)
2043: $14.50 ticket projected 13,600 season tickets

These numbers are terrible. In most of these seasons, the Mounties ranked either at the bottom or near the bottom of the league in total attendance. 2042 was the perfect storm. They obviously took down their prices to bring more fans into the stadium as they had just come off a 97 win season. They thought they had a contender and they wanted all of the city to be able to watch them in order to record higher profits. However, the team underperformed and suffered losses.

In these documents, there is also something known as "fan interest". We do not understand the mathematics behind it, but basically it's a formula that teams use to measure how engaged fans are. Since 2036, the Mounties have been among the worst. In fact, they highest they ever reached was around the low to mid 60's in 2042. Right now, they are at 53. If the team cannot re-sign their most popular players, then that number is going to crash in the next few years. It's possible that financial restraints will prevent them from re-signing their players, not due to poor money management, but because fans are not showing up. Fans in Vancouver just don't care. That's not unfair as the team has had only 2 winning seasons in the past decade. However, the fans seemed to have just abandoned the team once they entered a rebuild after the 2031 season. You know more about your fan base not when you're winning, but when you're losing.

What does all of this mean? Well, right now we can only speculate, but if these numbers do not improve, the team might have to do something that none of us want to see.
