Not everyone has the opportunity to pursue higher education. It's easy to take those opportunities for granted. So, seeing someone in the sports world go back to school to finish their education is highly encouraging to both young kids and teenagers. Who are we talking about? Young Mounties starting pitcher Quentin Mullins recently obtained his bachelor's degree in philosophy by taking online classes at Vancouver Community College.
Mullins talked about who inspired him to go back to school, "Before I finished high school to enter the draft, I promised my parents that I would go to college and get my degree before I turned 30. I doubt they expected I would get my degree only 4 years after leaving high school." Mullins said there were times where he struggled to do homework not just because of his commitment to baseball, but also due to what he called "a lack of simple intelligence." Well, seeing how he is now a college graduate, it is safe to say that he his intellect has improved at least slightly.
After he received his diploma, Mullins decided to go back to his old high school to catch up with his old teachers. Notably, he met up with his old varsity baseball coach. His coach persuaded Mullins to throw a bullpen session. However, his coach noticed something. Mullins had been throwing his changeup with a different grip than when he was in high school. "I didn't believe him at first, but after he showed me a different changeup grip, I was surprised at how different it felt," Mullins said. Mullins' changeup hasn't shown much progress since he was drafted. Maybe this rediscovery of an old pitching grip will allow Mullins to develop as a pitcher. The team would sure appreciate all the help they can get.
