TVT 2040.2 - Menne Re-signs!

Post by StormZ_23 » Wed Sep 18, 2019 12:46 pm

If you woke up today to an alert on your phone saying that Vancouver had re-signed Rashardo Menne III, you started off your day in a very happy mood. When you look further into the article and see that he signed a 6 year extension, we assume you got even more excited. For the first half of your day, you had a big smile on your face knowing you did not have to burn your Menne jersey at the end of the season. Well, all good things come with a cost. When the terms of the deal came out, you were probably pretty skeptical. $111 Million?!?! For an injury prone lead-off hitter! The team is crazy! They have lost their mind! Well we thought the same thing too and still do to an extent. Let's talk about it.

This extension doesn't start until next season, so Menne will be staying for at least 6 years as the last year is a player option worth $15 million. The contract is front loaded, which may end up being a smart move for the team in the long run. It's best to let Menne make the majority of his money early when the team is not ready to compete. They are still a year or two away from a playoff run. Once the team starts showing signs of winning, the owner will give GM Taylor Bettencourt more budget room to play with, which will make this contract better to take in.

We presume that Menne wanted about $20 million a season and the front office had no intention in losing him. They were not going to trade him as he would not be traded for peak value and if he did hit free agency, someone would have paid him what he wanted. He's not a guy at the end of his peak, he is a 23 year old that is just entering his peak. We're not here saying that is not potentially an overpay, but someone would have overpaid him, so why not let it be Vancouver? He is an elite lead-off hitter that can steal 70 bases a season. With the emerging bats in the lineup, we imagine Menne will be scoring more runs than ever. He may be injury prone, but his injuries have not been too costly the past couple of seasons. So, he could easily average 5 to 6 WAR a season and he could definitely do that during the duration of his contract, at least for the first 4 seasons.

Was this an overpay? Probably. But the team have put themselves in a situation that they have been planning for a long time. All the bad veteran contracts are finally gone, so the team has lots of money to play with. Why not re-sign your young star that will pivotal for a playoff run? If the team wanted to trade Menne, they would have done it years ago. So, this was expected.

Some other quick news. The winter meetings are happening this week. Many big names are still on the market and there are rumors that Vancouver is planning meetings with a few of them. One of those names we may have referenced in our last article. That is all we are going to say. Let the excitement begin!

The rebuild continues. Thanks for reading!

love the front loaded deal for EXACTLY the reasoning you stated, well done. I have my own 3B in Juan Mendoza to extend and the menne deal is an interesting baseline for me (since I feel Mendoza is better it makes me feel a bit better about his asking price).

They definitely have their similarities. I'm interested to see what Mendoza would get.

That's a lot of grub.

That said, he's a 23-year-old 5 WAR kind of player, so $15-$18 per year isn't horrible, and you've probably got the space to overpay early. Then there's that mustache, which is worth $1M just off the top.

Yep. Probably an overpay but you basically have to do it. You appear to have a plan to manage the impact of all that dough so it’s a good move.
