TVT 2039.4 - As One Ramírez Leaves, Another Comes In

Post by StormZ_23 » Mon Jul 22, 2019 2:39 pm

It’s been a while since an article was written here, but if there is ever a time to write one, it is now. Some big news just came out of Vancouver. A big trade has occurred that Mounties fans were dreading to hear. Let’s take a look at the trade.

Fan favorite starting pitcher Alejandro Ramírez was traded to the Jacksonville Hurricanes in exchange for two pitching prospects, Miguel Ayala and Raúl Silva. This trade has come as a shock to many Mounties fans. Why would the team trade a young starting pitcher who has two years left of control after this season? Even worse is the fact that Ramírez has had a slow start to the season, so his value is a lot lower compared to last off-season when he had come off an all star season. So the question everyone has is why would the team make this trade?

There are a couple reasons why the team makes this trade. First off, Ramírez does have two years of control after this season. However, who does the team need to pay after the 2040 season? The young star, Rashardo Menne III. The team most likely feels that it is better to use the money they would have given to Ramirez and give to Menne. Also, with the money they save by not re-signing Ramirez, they can go out and try to sign a true star pitcher while the team is near playoff contention. Let’s be honest, Ramírez is a #3 starter at best on a playoff team. The Mounties have loads of prospects that could easily fill that role in the future. These prospects will be much cheaper on the payroll, so the Mounties will have lots of money to throw around in their playoff window before they have to re-sign other young stars. You could say that the value of Ramírez has lowered this season, however he could lower his value even more if he continues to play poorly. It was better for the team to act now while he still has team control.

The second reason why this trade makes sense has to do with the prospects in the Mounties system, as well as who they received in the trade. Let’s start with who they received, Ayala and Silva. Ayala has done very well in AA season. His potential is that of a mid-rotation starter, exactly the level of performance the Mounties just traded with Ramírez. The team also got Silva, who looks like a back end starter, worst case scenario he is a good middle reliever. When you look at the Mounties system without these two guys, there are many guys that could still fill that mid rotation role in the future. Why not have an abundance of pitchers so you could potentially trade them for a better player in the future? The point is that the team tried to get more value over the long term and they did just that. They have the potential to use the money they were going to give to Ramírez and give it to a top end starter for their playoff window. It will take a few seasons before we find the true winner of this trade. However, it could easily be a win-win trade.

Wait, what does the title of the article mean? As one Ramírez leaves (Alejandro), another Ramírez comes in (José). José Ramírez is finally getting his shot in the big leagues. He played a few games last September and played pretty well. His spring training performance is what ultimately kept him out of the big leagues to start the season. However, with much of the rotation playing terribly, part of that being to poor infield defense, there is room for some of the guys in AAA to have a shot this season. Ramírez is the most major league ready of the starters in AAA. We expect him to stay in the rotation for the rest of the season, unless he plays terribly. That may not be the case though as in his first start he pitched 8 innings and allowed only 1 earned run in a Vancouver win against Yellow Spring Nine. At best Ramírez is a back-end starter, but he is hungry and will give it his all in his first real shot in the big leagues. We think he can do some big things for the team.

Good luck to Alejandro Ramírez in Jacksonville…oh how things come full circle.

The rebuild continues. Thanks for reading!

I think Jose Ramirez will do pretty well in Vancouver. So there's a plus. And youhave to love what five-pitch Ayala is going to bring.
