Well, that concludes another season in Vancouver, particularly another bad season. We could spend all day looking at the negatives of this past season but that gets us no where. There are actually a couple positives we would like to look at from this past season.

First, let's talk about the strong pitching seasons from two promising young players, Alejandro Ramírez and José Arellano. Let's start with Ramírez. Going into the season, Mounties fans had speculated how Ramírez would do in the starting rotation. The first couple of months were rough to say the least, with many fans calling for him to be sent back to the bullpen. The team persisted and they were rewarded with a great season by Ramirez. He finished with a 9-14 record, a 3.67 ERA, and 149 strikeouts in 183.2 IP. He was the representative for the Mounties in the all star game as well. This strong performance by Ramirez should move him up the rotation, maybe into the ace spot as many members of the rotation regressed. Moving into that ace spot may hurt his numbers next season, but he definitely has the talent to consistently perform well every start.

The next player to talk about is José Arellano. He was the top pitching prospect for the Mounties before this season, previously showing flashes of his potential in the minors. After a bad September last season and a mediocre spring training, he started the season in AAA. However, he showed he was too dominant for AAA batters and moved to the majors. He played incredibly well for a rookie and could have had a shot at rookie of the year honors if he stayed at the major league level for the entire season. His last few starts inflated his ERA a little bit but a 3.93 ERA is still solid. In 23 starts he had an 8-6 record with 102 strikeouts in 144.1 IP. His floor is a mid rotation starter but if he keeps developing, he will have a real shot at becoming a true #1 or #2 starter.

Finally, we want to talk about the 2038 draft class. This 2038 draft class as a whole was very deep and the Mounties got some great prospects that could be building blocks for the next great Mounties team. We talked about a few of these players in our top 10 prospects article, so we will just be listing names. First round pick Jeffrey Smith is the most exciting player and could become a franchise player for the Mounties. Second rounder Quentin Mullins looks like a solid pitcher. Gustavo Hernández and Glen MacKenzie look like potential steals. Fourth rounder Roberto Beltrán looks like one of the more intriguing picks of the draft as he is only 17 years old. He has a long way to go, but keep an eye out on this young shortstop. This past draft class for the Mounties looks like one of the most exciting in years. With the Mounties getting a top 6 pick in this upcoming draft, the future is definitely bright for this franchise.

I like Ramirez a lot. And the selection of Jeffrey Smith will make a impact quickly. He was one of the better developed player in the draft.

I really like both Ramirez and Arellano. Fun to see what they will do. Smith was a great take of a more developed player. He could play next year, and he can actually defend his corner outfield spot, which is rarer thatn it seems it should be.
