TVT 2038.1 - Meet the New Rule 5 Pick!

Post by StormZ_23 » Thu Mar 14, 2019 3:51 pm

The rule 5 draft is an interesting time during the off season. It gives rebuilding teams a chance to find gems that other teams did not want to hold on to. Well, the Mounties picked someone up in the rule 5 draft just a couple weeks ago. Let's analyze this selection.

His name is Michinaga Narita. He was selected at number 9 in the rule 5 draft from the Hawaii Tropics. His current profile projects him with a floor of a utility player with a ceiling of a #2 hitter in the lineup. While it may be unlikely that Narita develops into his ceiling, it is likely he turns into a defensive specialist who can steal bases and hit double digit home runs every season if he puts everything together.

Now, where is he at right now? Well, last season he was in A ball and didn't do too well offensively. He held a stat line of .228/.291/.410 in 128 games played. He did have 13 home runs and 13 stolen bases, so he did show some flashes of potential. Let's be optimistic for a minute and talk about his good traits. Minor league coaches have marveled at Narita's professionalism and his ability to lead a clubhouse. While he won't do that right away in Vancouver, seeing that he possesses these traits is always something that works in favor of player development. He has a decent eye but will strikeout pretty often too. To really reach that next level, he needs to work on his contact ability and we would really like to see him harness his speed on the base paths more often.

It is safe to assume that Narita is a long term project with a chance of sticking in the majors. Vancouver have nothing to compete for this season other than a top pick in the draft, so him staying on the roster all season is not impossible to envision. However, being 22 years old and barely holding his own in A ball last season, we would not be surprised if he was sent back to Hawaii during the season. Let's hope he proves us wrong.

Interesting choice. He's developed, at least. With a shot.

With the versatility, i think he's a great pickup. Has a role in a lot of organizations.
