Changes in Vancouver

The roster, it is achanging:

GONE
  • Valentín Colón chose to opt out of his $14 million for next year. He’s still a viable player but not worth that kind of cash. It will be interesting to see what he commands for cash in free agency. Had he not opted out, he would be gone anyway as Vancouver was not planning on exercising their team option for 2036.
  • Frank Thomas III has retired. Vancouver had expressed some interest in keeping him through his $4.0 million team option, but Frank preempted a decision on the option. After a memorable career as a designated hitter with a whole bunch of teams, he will be HOF bound soon.
  • Juan Rodríguez is gone having not met the vesting requirement in his contract. He was acquired from Calgary in the salary-saving cash-acquisition trade for Rick Ward. There was no intention of allowing him to ever meet that vesting requirement.
  • Bench coach (and former manager) Richard Shoulders retired, leaving three more years of an $890,000 salary on the table. No word on his replacement and not much lament that his expensive contract is off the books.
  • Minor leaguer Mike Román (age 28) retired. He would have become a free agent in a few days via arbitration denied.
GOING
  • Ray Perkins will declare as a free agent once he realizes than Vancouver will not be offering him the chance of arbitration. Vancouver would like to keep him, but his estimated arbitration value of almost $11 million is way too much for a middle reliever.
  • Louis Hall will declare for free agency. He was injured in spring training and will not be ready to play until July at the earliest. His agent is looking for an extension of $6.0 million per year for three years. Seriously?
When all those moves hit the bottom line, the Vancouver payroll for next year will be roughly $70 million depending on the final arbitration results on Ki-seop Park, Rodrigo Lugo, Hotha Popo, Christian Baudouin, Bert Hugill, and Troy Downey. The $70 million figure includes the annual $10.1 million amount due for the retention portion of Bertram Hahn’s salary (which will be payable through and including 2039).
