Assessment and Outlook – Catcher & Outfield
a Look Back and a Glance Ahead
by Caitlen Sullivan

Today we continue our year end assessment and brief look ahead

Catcher
Hotha Popo started 115 games here and projects to be the starter next year. He started very slowly offensively this year but slowly edged his average up to .236. He had a nice +4.8 zone rating and threw out 30% of stealers. Only 23, he’s a hard worker and well liked by his teammates. After him it’s blah in all respects. The first half season Rich Xi was the backup. He hit .222, had a slightly negative zone rating, and was not well regarded by management. In fact, he’s all the way down in AA now. In retrospect, Vancouver should have kept him in the backup job since:
  • Veteran mid-year signee Dave Robertson was a disaster (.143). He came and went quickly.
  • Yoshiake Nakamura, also a mid-season signee, was even worse. Nakamura will be on a fast train (bus?/plane?) out of town soon after the season ends.
There is nothing in the Vancouver system resembling catcher potential, so it’s either free agency or a trade to find a backup for H-Po next year.

Left Field
Gebre-Egziabher Mwaka started 117 games in left. While his defensive ratings look good, he finished with a slightly negative zone rating. He hit .261 with decent power (21 home runs). The rest of the time it was Pierre Cordona in left. He had a miserable offensive season. Rumor has it that the Mounties hope Cordona can bounce back to his 2028-2033 offensive numbers and start everyday in left next season.

Right Field
Young Guy Webb (age 23) started 130+ games in right. He was second on the team in home runs (26) and provides good defense (+3.4 ZR). He hits left handers much better than right handers. Don’t be surprised to see him and Mwaka platooning in right to start 2036, especially if Cordona rebounds at the plate in left.

Center Field
Ki-seop Park owns center field. He’s solid defensively (+3.5 ZR with 17 assists) and he hit over .280. And he’s super fast. At year end he had 63 stolen bases in 74 attempts after getting the green light late in the year. Pierre Cordona can move over and fill in when necessary.

What’s in the system? Triple A players Tony Charles and Daniel Jones both show some offensive potential, but both are defensive liabilities. There isn’t a lot else in sight when you look down the organization. Look for the Mounties to seek out a backup outfielder with good defensive skills in free agency.
