Are you willing to pay the price for an ace?
That's the question I'm asking myself as we inch closer and closer to free agency. Understandably, Dirk Bessi chose to opt-out of the remainder of his contract after having a career year. At the time of writing this he's currently leading the polls in Nebraska award voting and he wants to cash in on it. He is willing to negotiate with us which is a positive, we can only hope that we can work something out before free agents file.
I've made sure to be careful with finances, and with Gamal bin Badr, Jamie Angwin, and Mike Cox all having team options totaling roughly $25 million, it'll certainly help to have the financial flexibility. Now I can't see far into the future, but I know eventually guys like Jesus Garcia, Serge Elovsky, Royce Hinkle and Mitchell Goater will all want to be paid at roughly the same time, so I don't want to harm myself giving Bessi a backloaded deal, which is what he's currently asking for.
I signed Bessi back in 2060 after a god awful 2059 campaign and basically gave him the keys to the team, (actually I wanted Adam Hines but anyways). Then he got traded to Long Beach for a cup of coffee last season before I dealt for him back a few months later. In 77 starts with the team, Bessi has a 35-24 record, 3.50 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 10 WAR. That's pretty damn good, so what's the hesitation? Well the issue is his injury proneness, it's fragile. However outside of his season ender this year, Bessi has been healthy, so maybe he's only slightly fragile? With him turning 30 could it become worse, I don't know. He already had a major injury and missed all of 2059, do i want to take that chance here.
I guess we'll see when we get updated whether or not we can work out a deal to keep our ace here.

Bessi’s been much better than Hines.

The question is: Can you afford to pay Bessi to do nothing?

Ah. I traded away Bessi and several other good prospects for Isam. No losers in that trade.
