For the second year in a row, starting pitcher Peter Dean has exceeded expectations. Dean finished the 2061 season at 13-7 (compared to 9-9 in 2060) with an ERA of 2.94 and a WHIP of 1.21. He pitched more than his share of innings at 187 in the process of putting together the numbers to result in a 3.4 ERA for the season after posting a 2.0 WAR in 2060.

Dean’s salary of $2.2M was well worth what he provided to the Valencia rotation. With his resurgence, Dean is asking for a three year deal at $4M per year which is more than the Stars’ front office would want to put toward in 38 year old arm.

Originally signed when Valencia was unable to extend the contract of Adam Hines, Dean put up comparable numbers over the last two seasons. Dean’s record over the last two years was 22-16 while Hines went 23-16. Dean’s overall WAR over the past two seasons totaled 5.4 while Hines’ WAR was 6.0 The major difference was that the price tag for Dean was $3.3M over the past two seasons while Hines contract was $39.6M over the same two years with 4 more years left on his contract at $20M per pop.

If only a few of the other deals made over the last few seasons worked out as well.

Wonder if he would negotiate down to a one-year deal.
