As the Valencia front office continues to decipher how to get their budget in order for next year, it will have to contemplate the fate of their seven players currently on expiring contracts.
Qadir bin Gamal ($4.7M) - Qadir has joined the club of Valencia payers taking a nose dive in 2061. His WAR of 2.9 and 2.4 the previous two seasons has turned into a projected -1.3 this season. His batting average has dropped from .282 to .222. Although the month of June was better where he hit .273, it will take more than that to make his overall season numbers to make that salary palatable.
PREDICTION: He wants to test free agency. Let him.
Peter Dean ($2.2M) The Peter Dean/Gregg Greathouse effect seems to be holding on for another year to this point. Peter is currently at 7-4 with a 3.24 ERA and a projected WAR of 2.1. Pretty productive for that salary if he can keep the pace up and not flame out over the last 6 weeks of the season as was seen in 2060
PREDICTION: He wants to test free agency. Given his 38 year-old arm, this will likely be the last season we see the Dean/Greathouse combination.
Jeff Doane ($1.8M) After spending the beginning of 2061 in AAA after a so-so campaign in 2060, Jeff has not allowed a run in his 5 games/7.2 innings of work.
PREDICTION: He wants a I year/$1.1M salary. If you take his current production over a full season and his 2060 WAR of 1.4, he would be worth that salary. Based on Valencia's financial limitations this may be one that it has to pass on.
Nobuhito Kan ($1.4M) Nobbie's numbers for the year include an ERA of 5.03 up a full run from 2060 and a projected WAR of 0.4.
PREDICTION: Nobbie wants a 3 year/$1.4M per year extension. Not gonna happen at this point.
Dana Pualani ($1.2M) Dana is the sole lefty of the bullpen at this point. He currently has an ERA of 5.64 and a projected WAR of 0.5)
PREDICTION: Dana wants a 3 year/$1.3M per year extension. Not likely to happen at this point either.
Tomas Franco ($500K)
Tomas also wants a 3 year/$1.3M per year extension. Would be more likely to happen than the previous two players mentioned, but at 35 years of age and where Valencia is it will probably not happen.
Quintin Birss ($500K) Quintin did a stint for 13 games in 2060 where he had an ERA of 3.19 and a WHIP of 1.23 during an injury replacement. He is posting similar numbers in AAA this year (4-3 with 2 saves and a 3.67 ERA).
PREDICTION: Quintin wants a 1 year/$750K extension. This may be entered into the mix depending on how everything else evolves.
