For the third time as in many days, the Stars’ front office have extended a contract. This time it is to the 35 year-old left-handed reliever Greg Jackson. The terms of the contract was a $2.9M/2-year deal with an option on the second year.
During the 2059 season, Jackson pitched 90.2 innings with a 3.18 ERA. This was his second best season ERA in his career but the southpaw is 35 years of age. With a WAR of 0.6 this past season, he will need to repeat that output to break even on the money spent for this contract.
With seven of the people on the Valencia pitching staff above 30 years old and six of them under contract for next season after the last two extensions, one wonders if the front office is thinking they need another season to get their finances in order before they can position themselves for a more substantial shot at a post-season run.
Greg Jackson stated during a phone interview from his Long Beach, California home, “I am glad that I can stay in the area I grew up in for another year. It has been a good 15 year stint here so far.”
