Being past the 60 game mark of the season, the Gas staff figured it was time to give some preliminary marks to the arbitration decisions that were made by the GM this spring. The front office changeover happened just a few days prior to the arbitration decisions having to be made so there was not much time to cook the books from previous seasons and digest the concoction that resulted from it.
SP Adam Hines received $6.9M in arbitration from the Stars. The staff ace and local favorite finished the 2058 season with an 11-11 record with a 3.60 ERA over 185 innings resulting in a WAR of 3.4. A little over a third into the season and Adam is at 7-4 with a 3.32 and a WAR of 1.4 which at this point would project into 18 wins and a WAR of 3.6. Grade: B
RP Siua Hooheno came up with $1.6M in arbitration. His 2058 stats included a 4-3 record, a 5.03 ERA and a WAR of 0.9 in 2058. Siua currently a 3.04 ERA in 23 innings of work resulting in a current WAR of 0.3 and a year-long projected WAR of 0.6. Grade: C-
3B Tim Bartlett was awarded $3.4M this past spring. His stats from last season included a .231 batting average while hitting 18 HRs resulting in a 0.8 WAR. This season has him hitting .189 with 6 homers but his glove/arm still has managed to result in a WAR of 0.5 to date and a projected 1.2 WAR for the season. Grade: C-
C Luis Gonzales was awarded $3.4M via arbitration. Luis has improved his average from .214 up to .286 giving him a 1.1 WAR to date. His year-long WAR projection is currently at 2.9 due to him throwing out potential base stealers 36.7% of the time. Grade B
RF Koray Kapkin brought home $909K for this season. While he is a good glove in the field when needed he is only hitting .169 which results in a projected 2059 WAR of -0.9. Grade: D
RF Jose Vargas received $1.6M this spring as has never had a WAR above 1. That has changed so far this season as he has hit .376 with 19 steals so far this season with a WAR of 2.7. If Jose keeps this up, he may be pushing a WAR of 7 by season’s end. Grade: A+
In the opinion of the Gas crack staff , the overall grade to this point is sitting at a B-.
