Today the Star front office announced its new financial guru. The Stars GM held a press conference to introduce Abbi Cuss.

After overlooking the team financial situation, the Valencia exec wanted to bring in someone to get out of debt.
Looking at the current balance sheet, the Stars are $9M in debt. The situation in the bonus funds portion of the ledger does not look much better at -$1.7M. The current player payroll is $86M with less than $1M available to spend in free agency.

There are 4 free agents that will likely not be signed including RP Hotha Buyoya, RP Chung Chan, C Xiao-gang Peng and 1B Carlos Souza. Not signing these four players would reduce last year’s payroll by $9.6M.

Offsetting this savings will be the arbitration of SP Adam Hines, RP Sia Hooheno, C Luis Gonzales, 3B Tim Barlett, RF Kory Kapkin and RF Jose Vargas. The total increase if all the arbitrations are offered it estimated to be just shy of $5M.

The black hole of a salary for SP Ruben Vazquez goes from $19.7M in 2058 to $9.5M in 2059 which will be a big help to making the organization profitable again. There are a few players that could bring in some quick cash, but at this point the front office seems content to ride this off-season out without being a major player in the free agent market.

When asked about Abbi Cuss’ name and the last name being sort of unusual, the GM stated that “We don’t know her last name, we just call her that because she cusses every time she looks at the books.”
