Recap of Stars Postseason, Game 3

In the third game of the series, the Stars returned to Dunn Field in hopes that the change of scenery might lead to a better outcome. After losing a nail-biter in the first game, and a not very competitive game two, anything seemed possible, from a narrow Stars loss in fourteen to a blowout Stars loss in nine. From the jump the night felt off, though, from the noticeably less-than-capacity crowd to Banger Dan's two-run homer in the top of the first. Hope never really made an appearance.

The Stars turned to right-hander Mike Alexander in Game 3 (12-10, 5.74 ERA, 160 IP). This tells you pretty much all you need to know about the state of Valencia pitching in 2051. The Nine would start left-hander Mathis Gérard (14-13, 3.82 ERA, 188.2 IP), a competent but by no means flashy starter who leans heavily on his defense to get through a ballgame.

It was not Alexander's night. He would depart after just four innings in which he gave up three runs on six hits and three walks, striking out just two batters. Sadly, that might have been the best performance by a Valencia starter in the series. Gerard, on the other hand, would pick up player of the game honors after pitching six and a third innings in which he gave up just one run on five hits and two walks, striking out five.

The Stars would actually outhit the Nine in this game 11-8, but couldn't seem to get the hits when it mattered most, stranding eleven base runners. And for the third straight game, the Stars hit no home runs. The Nine would tally five home runs in the series.

Who was the Valencia MVP of the series? Hard call to make when the team failed to notch a victory, but the play of Gilberto Falchonelli deserves some praise. The Stars outfielder slashed .500/.571/.833 in twelve at-bats, driving in three runs in three games.

Honorable mention goes to the bullpen duo of Gerardo López (who perhaps should have been given the chance to start), and Martin Román, who shook off some pretty bad postseason juju to hand in a very good performance in John Olson's absence. The bullpen overall acquitted itself fairly well, earning a 2.63 ERA for the series in 13 2/3 IP. By contrast, the three Valencia starters combined for a 7.36 ERA in their 14 2/3.
